I think I also found out another issue with modern “lore toons”:
They lost sight of their original identity
To give two examples of older cartoons with “lore”, look at KND and Venture Bros; they became more focused on story as they went on, but never lost sight of their “core”.
I think the reason many people seem to be turning on "lore toons" is that I think the writers are biting off more than they can chew, and either don't know how to handle the massive tone changes or want to copy stuff they like, like Gravity Falls or Bojack Horseman.
This is why we can't have comedy or satire anymore. because even the mild stuff pisses them off.
and I think even the "he's a much better person now" people are massive pushovers.
It should not matter if he drew the art today or ten years ago. Harassment over drawings is bad.
