In July 2022, a federal court in Nashville imposed a gag order that prohibited civil-rights attorney Daniel Horwitz from talking publicly about a wrongful-death case he brought against a private prison.

Yesterday, District Court judges for Middle Tennessee amended the court’s local rules to remove a provision that prevented attorneys from discussing their cases with the media and the public.

This is a huge win for the #FirstAmendment in Middle TN!

The Federal District Court in MD Tennessee silenced attorney Daniel Horowitz from speaking out about his public-interest cases.

So @IJ (@jaredmcclain, @benjaminafield, @Kinger_DC) sued the court. And we won. The Court just changed its rule.

The judges tried to wear us down with procedural moves. We had to file 12 briefs in six months before they gave in and repealed their unconstitutional rule.

Now Daniel Horwitz—and all attorneys in the Middle District of Tennessee—are finally free to talk about their cases.
