A27: Waleed is acting like a zombie because what has happend to him in the last 2 weeks has left him with nothing to be positive about. Especially for a child his age, they shouldnβt have to go through the challenges and destruction he has faced. #RefugeeHS
A26: Based on the clues, we can see that Josefβs father has been scarred from the time he had spent in the concentration camp. He is now not able to make his own descion because he continues to think he is still in the camp, while reflecting on what heβd experience #RefugeeHS
A64 Continued: three characters. If I was in charge of a different country that had a greater population density, like England, I would be more strict on the refugees I let in. #RefugeeHS
A64: Depending on the details of my country, I would handle the situation differently for each one. If I was to assume I was an official in Canada, I would most likely allow more refugees in because of the vacant space, if I know they have done nothing wrong, like the #RefugeeHS
A63: Situations that happened to Josef, where his own people killed each other over their faith don't occur very often anymore. Currently, having to leave a war torn country like Mahmoud, and countries turning down refugees like in Isabel's story are seen more often #RefugeeHS
A62: The book did end the way I expected, with one of the characters eventually dying. I was interested to see what had happened to Josef's father as he stayed in Cuba. They possibly could've mentioned him at the end of Isabel's chapter considering he was left at Cuba #RefugeeHS
A61: Mahmoud's father makes jokes like this because he is trying to turn the most negative situations into more positive ones for as long as he can. VArious people use this method to try and avoid being sad, especially when they used to be in a happy mood. #RefugeeHS
A60: The Hungarian people never help the Refugees because they view them as a nuisance to their country, even though they are just trying to find asylum. This shows people across the world to help the people with less, whether they are homeless or just need help. #RefugeeHS
A59: It is emphatically impossible for a mother who has fought so hard to choose for one of her two children to a concentration camp. However logically speaking, it would make most sense for her to send Josef because he can take care of himself better than Ruthie. #RefugeeHS
A58: Alan Gratz has added more challenges at the end of the novel because he wants to keep the readers interested and amused until the very end. It is unclear whether which ones will make it to their final destination, but I believe one or two will not make it home. #RefugeeHS
A57: Mahmoud has been able to sustain the smallest amount of hope because his family had not been able to do so. When Mahmoud's family were stable, he could be quiet and still be happy, but now that his family are surrounded by negativity, his only source is himself. #RefugeeHS
A56: After Isabel talks about the challenges they have faced in their journey to freedom, the baby being born symbolizes a new beginning for her and the families. This provided a light in that wasn't there before, showing a possible positive ending to her story #RefugeeHS
A55: Alan Gratz has intertwined the three stories' fate by showing that the other stories play a role in the development of others. For instance, when Lito had not let the St. Louis off to Cuba, he forced them to go back to Cuba. I believe that Alan Gratz wanted to #RefugeeHS
A54: Captain Schroeder did not know what it mean to be sent to a concentration camp. If he had, he wouldn't have the privilege to steer boats in Germany. The only Germans that knew what was occuring were the ones who were seeing it first hand, like the Jews and Nazis. #RefugeeHS
A53 Continued: I think it was the right the decision to give the ship back because the would have not been able to steer the ship away from Germany anyways. #RefugeeHS
A53: Captain Schroeder talks to the mutineers because he knows if they get caught, they can get charged and sent to jail and also knows none of the mutineers can steer a ship.
A52: I believe Isabel is in the worst situation after Ivan dieing and now being so close to reaching Florida. If I was able to help them I would provide some sort of a distraction that would legally force them to help me instead, like pretending to drown. #RefugeeHS
A51: They must feel exhausted and unlucky with the amount of issues they have faced in this single journey. With them spending a long time trying to reach Horgos and not having a very long distance to travel because of the dilemmas, they must feel like this is unjust. #RefugeeHS
A50: When Lito refers to the St. Louis, is trying to be comedic and imply that their boat would not make it. Now knowing that the boat has to go back to Europe, it tells us that Joseph will not die on the boat, but eventually struggle when he was sent to Europe #RefugeeHs
