Joining people from across London today to mark 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street.
In 1936, Jewish and Irish communities, trade unionists and working people stood united against fascism, antisemitism and hatred
90 years on, that message matters as much as ever.
I reported on Labour Party Conference for @tribunemagazine.
Burnham is the most left-speaking Prime Minister in a generation - the Labour left has to be in the fight to make those words a reality.

We’re so excited to announce this year’s Labour for Trans Rights Rally 🏳️⚧️🌹
If you’re at Labour Conference, join us to say loud and clear that the labour movement stands with the trans community 👇
The appointment of previous Labour deputy leader as vice president of Palantir is an extremely worrying escalation in Palantir’s attempts to influence the Labour Party in pursuit of lucrative government contracts.
From NHS patient data grabs, shady AI testing, tax avoidance, surveillance of activists, migrants, contracts with ICE, along with their ongoing tech support to Israel in its war crimes - this is a company our public services should be nowhere near.
Lucy Powell has spoken today about a return to Labour values, that must urgently begin with allowing conference to take a stance on our future relationship with these anti Labour corporations.
Great to see @SadiqKhan working with unions to bring London's buses back into public ownership.
Let's make sure this is the first step in publicly owned transport that delivers a better deal for passengers and workers alike.
"Refusing to align British Jews with the actions of a violent ethno nationalist govt in the M/E makes us safer"
Emily Stevenson from Na'amod is asked about comments by the Chief Rabbi that imposing sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements makes Jews in Britain less safe.
"This is a welcome step in the right direction.. it still needs to go further. One drawback is the govt not recognising that Jewish settler terrorism in the West Bank is not an aberration, it is enacted, aided & abetted by the Israeli state"
Emily Stevenson from Na'amod
This is truly a dark day for British Jews.
Today our Government has chosen to ignore the deep concerns expressed by so many of us.
The measures announced amount to little more than political flag bearing for mendacious anti-Israel rhetoric and those who harbour a dangerous obsession with the Jewish State. These measures will succeed only in bolstering the very extremism they seek to target.
On the eve of Rosh Hashanah and at a time when our community is more vulnerable than ever to the wave of extremism that has been building over recent years, these sanctions do nothing to advance the cause of peace. Nor do they make anyone safer – quite the contrary.
Gesture politics of this kind feeds into an increasingly hostile discourse about Israel, and the cumulative effect of such punitive policies is to further embolden those, at home and abroad, who use hatred as a weapon against Jews.
As many have pointed out, this would never have happened without the solidarity of hundreds of thousands of people on our streets. Every protest has included a large Jewish bloc.
We will not stop until Britain has pulled every lever to push for Palestinian liberation. 2/2
Yesterday was hugely significant, and there is no doubt that Ed Miliband has shown courage in the face of immense pressure.
However, this must now be the beginning, not the end. Further action must target the Israeli state that orchestrates & enables settlement expansion. 1/2
The worst people in British politics are about to go mental at the idea the UK should finally uphold its obligations under international law. Don’t let the noise get to you @andyburnham & @Ed_Miliband, the overwhelming majority of ordinary people in the UK support these sanctions
The wildly over-the-top reaction to Britain's tiny Israeli settlements trade ban – including hyperbolic media inflation of minimal risks and nonsense warnings – is a sign of just how much international impunity Israel has enjoyed, and for how long
Fwiw, bad faith critics, who are currently in meltdown, will continue to oppose *any* meaningful action against Israel, regardless of how modest it is. Ignore them.
The Government must block out the noise and act with courage.
It is Israel that continues to make the world a more dangerous place by destroying international law. Ending its impunity is decades overdue.
In fact, there are growing numbers of British Jews who would support such measures.
Either way, while this action will be welcome, it must not be the end.
Communities in the West Bank are under relentless assault by state-backed settlers, with settlement expansion only increasing.
Orgs like the BoD, however, will continue to oppose any meaningful action to prevent this, conflating British Jews with Israeli state policy.
Board of Deputies President Phil Rosenberg quoted in today's Times: “Our community condemns violence by extremist settlers. But we have significant concerns about unintended consequences. We’ve also stressed to the government that any approach to the conflict that focuses narrowly on the actions of the Israeli government, and doesn’t sufficiently address the actions and responsibility of Palestinian leaders, fuels a climate of hatred not only towards Israel but towards British Jews.”
We need voices on the NEC that will stand up for party democracy and fight for justice at home and abroad.
With this in mind, I’m pleased to have voted for these fantastic candidates, followed by the Mainstream slate.
