NEW: As the U.S. sinks deeper into division at home and abroad, the Senate convened Wednesday to safeguard a corner of the national edifice that some would say is doing comparably well.

Cantwell just acknowledged part of the reasoning behind this bill is to get rid of a “pay for play” system, so trying to move backwards.
Continuing to fight “pay for play” is one of college athletics’ biggest problems right now.
Better to just admit the truth & move forward.
Ted Cruz was recently asked if Cody Campbell wrote his new college sports bill. Cruz said no.
But Campbell is a big Cruz donor. He's given directly. Given to Super PACs. Given to leadership PACs.
His wife has made the same donations. On the same days.
The four witnesses at Wednesday's @SenateCommerce hearing on the Protect College Sports Act included @NotreDame AD Pete Bevacqua, whose surname, translating from Italian as “water drinker,” was repeatedly mispronounced by senators. (via @Sportico)

"Wednesday’s [college sports] hearing unfolded against the backdrop of escalating hostilities between the U.S. and Iran. [The conflict] has fueled inflation, rattled global markets and highlighted Congress’ diminished oversight role."

Look folks, if you really want to understand why the college sports landscape is so difficult to reconcile, the graphic below is the why in a nutshell.
What we learn from thinking through it: those who would benefit most from collective stability often lack power. Those with power often benefit from legal and institutional ambiguity.
Sport by sport collective bargaining might work, starting with football, and we could get there. It's really hard though.
A link to my post that tried to explain it from a political economy/incentives point of view: https://t.co/aLBZ7AwIGt
Federal Judge advances ex-Alabama basketball player Kai Spears’s defamation suit against the NY Times over inaccurate reporting about his alleged proximity to a crime. Very interesting case for sports & media, especially journalists who try to break news. https://t.co/BZHSICB3CV.
I spoke with @tedcruz about the ‘Protect College Sports Act’
Most importantly, clarifying the “Lane Kiffin Rule” and how the NCAA would have to change the current calendar with transfer portal.
Yes, Cruz says the NCAA would have to change the dates
There's a big problem with the Protect College Sports Act that few people are talking about. Congress defined an athlete spending cap by reference to the House settlement's amendment mechanism, meaning that Judge Wilken, not Congress, effectively controls what the statutory cap is. But Congress can't delegate its legislative powers to the judiciary. https://t.co/lOKAflhKNB
We talked to nearly 100 people about youth sports in New Jersey and found a predatory industry that is leaving parents broke, exhausted and wondering how the games of their childhood took over their adult lives. Our six-month investigation: https://t.co/plE3w618qt
NEW: For third time in three years, @VarsityBrands has settled an antitrust lawsuit over its cheerleading business practices. The latest settlement comes two weeks before a trial was set to take place in Texas.

NEW: The Save College Sports Act yielded a harsh reaction from college athlete advocates, but the House v. NCAA class counsel perceived some unintended benefits to Cruz-Cantwell bill while expressing little concern it will become law. For @Sportico 👇

The Protect College Sports Act may unintentionally provide support for the House class counsel’s argument that MMR companies are not associated entities under the terms of the House settlement.
"Organizations…formally condemn" the Cruz-Cantwell bill "as Capitol Hill’s latest attempt to suppress players’ economic freedom in the name of stability."
Imagine if colleges just followed NCAA rules, which those colleges voted to create?
A lot easier than relying on Congress.
@heitner@Sportico Alas, that’s not what they say they like about the bill, nor are they supportive of its passage. Perhaps my tweet failed to capture the article.
