MY TAKE: “The best economic news is that tomorrow’s startups are poised to tackle challenges that, until recently, have been overlooked. And they’ll do it increasingly from places that have also been overlooked.” https://t.co/Ehrhe0Euks #RiseOfRest@WSJ
1/2: There are few jobs as misunderstood as those of the first ten employees at a Startup. Their job descriptions don't match the reality of what they actually do on a day-to-day basis.
Every day something unexpected shows up and they just have to deal with it.
1/8: If we were wildly successful this half, what’s the ideal outcome for customers using our product?
The point of target metrics is to keep ourselves accountable to doing our best for customers, and in turn, the business.
Any metric will be a proxy; THIS is the real goal.
Steve said "one thing I've learned working for Jeff is that he is a man of action. If there's a traffic jam on the highway, he'd rather take the side roads even if it takes him longer to reach his destination. He must always be moving. It's inspiring, and sometimes infuriating."
One of the most important things I learned from Jeff Bezos was to develop a bias for action. He wasn't always right, but he was always ready to act (and he was right much more than wrong). Like the time we were flying to Chicago and nearly wound up in Paris. Here's what happened:
If you build a brand through the lens of CAC or payback period and not loyalty, quality, and superior experience — you’ve already lost.
Retail is more art than science.
It drives me crazy when senior leaders say "everybody needs to be an innovator"!
Shows they don’t understand Innovation: there’s a difference btw efficiency Innovation (for all) and disruptive/business model Innovation (hard + requires experience & skill)

If you want a business to fail, setup a committee of equals.
A great saying about this:
"A dog with two owners dies of hunger."
Every business, team, product, initiative, etc needs a single person who is ultimately responsible.
Otherwise, it's always someone else's fault.
