Because Orochimaru’s relationship with Sage Mode wasn’t a failed attempt he gave up on, it was a fundamental biological incompatibility that no amount of effort or experimentation could overcome, and Orochimaru was smart enough to recognize the difference between a solvable problem and a structural limitation early enough to redirect his resources elsewhere.

Sage Mode requires the user to remain completely still while absorbing natural energy, which means the body must be stable enough to hold that absorption without the natural energy corrupting the flesh. Orochimaru’s body was the opposite of stable. He had spent decades modifying his cellular structure through snake DNA, forbidden jutsu experimentation and repeated body transfers that left his physical form in a state of constant artificial flux. Natural energy entering a body that unstable doesn’t produce Sage transformation, it accelerates the corruption process and begins turning the host into a statue, which is exactly what happened during his attempts.

The deeper issue is philosophical as much as physical. Orochimaru’s entire methodology was about imposing his will on existence through technique, forbidden knowledge and cellular manipulation. Sage Mode requires the opposite, complete surrender and stillness, letting natural energy flow into you rather than reaching out to take it. That’s antithetical to everything Orochimaru was as a person and a scientist. Even if he had solved the biological compatibility problem he would have had to fundamentally change how he approached power itself, which was never something he was willing to do.

Kabuto mastering Sage Mode where Orochimaru failed wasn’t just a power comparison. It was evidence that Kabuto had developed a relationship with surrender and patience that his master never could.
