The comparison between Mayer and Durbin is a good way to explain why Mayer didn’t work in Boston.

In pretty much every way, Mayer is the more talented player. But I think his California Coolness worked against him, especially in juxtaposition to the absolute dirtdog that is Caleb Durbin.

One guy made all the adjustments necessary to do a complete 180 in a season. The other still hasn’t figured out how to hit off speed and breaking pitches. One guy is popping a dislocated finger back in and taking Cam Schlittler deep the next day. The other guy is constantly out of the lineup and hasn’t finished a season healthy in 5 years.

It’s a cliche, but I think there is a certain type of mentality and personality to succeed in Boston, and I don’t think Mayer was the right fit
