Attended Turkana county Prosopis Management Planning workshop at Stegra convened by The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Natural Resources, and Climate Change in partnership with WorldVision -Imara program. Prosopis juliflora has invaded vast areas, especially the riverine ecosystem, leading to a decline in the population of key forage species and thus threatening the socio-economic livelihoods of Turkana County.
The national strategy plan (Initial) aims at effectively managing the species using a combination of biological, chemical, mechanical, and utilization methods. The Strategy and Action Plan focuses on targeted removal of Prosopis juliflora trees and reclaiming these sites by introducing active land use systems that involve planting alternative tree species, appropriate pasture grass, perennial browse shrubs, and food crops that all offer a range of alternative livelihood options to affected communities sustainably. The overriding goal for the strategy and Action Plan is to effectively control and manage Prosopis juliflora for enhanced ecological functioning of landscapes and improved livelihoods.
