“The world has a counterfeit for all the graces of the divine life, and all the blessings of the glorious gospel. For zeal, it has enthusiasm; for holiness, it has monkery; for the mortification of sin, it has asceticism; for the righteousness of Christ, it has filthy rags; for the Spirit’s work, it has moral persuasion and outward decency; for the power and demonstration of the holy one, it has the argument, the eloquence, and authority of man; for the unity of the Spirit, it has the unity of external power, or compulsion; for glory, honor, and immortality, it has posthumous fame, or the mimic honor which earth heaps upon its idols; and in regard to all these things, we are only saying that the world puts the shadow for the substance, the name for the reality, the cold and haggard skeleton for the divine and living form.”
W. K. Tweedie
An atonement that saves only those for whom it was made is not adequate to save those for whom it was not made. Why? It is not a satisfaction for their sins. Hypothetical sufficiency is not sufficient. This is why some of the 17th century Puritans like John Owen changed the meaning of the Lombardian formula: “Sufficient for all; efficient only for the elect.” What Lombard meant by the formula was the atonement was sufficient for all because it was a satisfaction for the sins of for all. What 17th century Limitarians meant by the formula was this: “The atonement *could have been* sufficient for all had God intended it to be accomplished for all. But, of course, God intended the atonement only for the elect. Therefore, it is only truly sufficient for them.” The blind spot here is staggering.
