The painting depicts the legendary final moments of Cleopatra VII (the last Ptolemaic ruler of Egypt) after her suicide in 30 BC, following the defeat by Octavian (future Augustus) and the death of Mark Antony. According to ancient accounts (notably Plutarch), Cleopatra chose death by asp bite (or possibly poison) rather than being paraded in a Roman triumph.

In Rixens' dramatic, sensual interpretation; Cleopatra lies nude (except for jewelry, armbands, and a headpiece with a uraeus cobra) on a luxurious bed draped in white and patterned fabrics, with her eyes closed in death or near-death. A servant/attendant (likely representing one of her loyal handmaidens, such as Iras) kneels or leans over her in grief, gently touching or adjusting the queen's diadem/headpiece. This figure is clothed in semi-transparent drapery and Egyptian-inspired attire.

The setting is an opulent ancient Egyptian interior with hieroglyphs, statues (including a figure of a god or pharaoh), colorful wall hangings (one featuring a winged deity, possibly Horus or a vulture goddess), ornate furniture, a leopard-skin rug, and ritual objects like a basket of figs or dates in the foreground.

The mood blends tragedy, exoticism, and eroticism—typical of 19th-century European "history paintings" that romanticized the East and female nudes under the guise of classical subjects.
The composition uses rich colors, precise academic realism, and theatrical lighting to heighten the sensuality of Cleopatra's pale body against the darker, ornate surroundings. Rixens exhibited it at the Paris Salon of 1874, where it was well-received.

Jean-André Rixens was a French painter trained in the academic tradition. He specialized in historical and mythological scenes with a strong Orientalist flavor, often featuring dramatic nudes and ancient themes. This work is one of his most famous and exemplifies the era's fascination with Cleopatra as a tragic, seductive femme fatale.
