For those that play tournaments, you already know this, but I’ll post this for those that don’t.

I also would not consider myself an elite pro (really semi pro), but I’m good.

Great tournament pros cash ~20% of tournaments. This is the Mendoza line for baseball basically, for frame of reference.

Great pros final table 2-3%. Win 1% or less. Obv numbers can swing if you’re playing small vs huge field events.

Great pro ROI estimated around 20-30%, but not sure if we have an official number. But obv great pros will have years where they got buried, and years where they got 80%. So a million dollar year is really 200-300k profit, before taxes, expenses, and whatever you sold or swapped.

Almost no pros (maybe literally none of them) survive from just tournament poker. It’s impossible. They sell action, swap, play cash games or fund life with side gigs like coaching or other stuff. The majority of players are negative. It’s a brutal brutal game, which needs to be funded by big scores and podium finishes. It’s not for the faint of heart.
