The truth about Jimothy and Danny. 🦝

Over the last few weeks, millions of people have fallen in love with “Jimothy.”

But after speaking directly with the creator who’s been documenting these raccoons for years, seeing the evidence online and in the look of them, here’s what actually happened:

There are two short-spined raccoons.

Danny is the original. He’s older, larger, and has been visiting the Seattle backyard for years. Jimothy is much younger, smaller, and has the distinctive black dots above his eyes.

As Jimothy exploded across the internet, many older videos of Danny were mistakenly shared as Jimothy. The confusion became so widespread that even major news outlets aired footage of Danny while reporting on Jimothy’s story.

The creator confirmed to me that Danny has been around for years and that Jimothy is a younger raccoon they believe may even be Danny’s son. They are NOT happy about people calling Danny Jimothy in the viral clips

Chances are you’ve actually been watching Danny.

A short-spined raccoon, believed to be internet sensation Jimothy’s father, was seen rolling around a yard in Seattle, Washington, in August last year.

Anna Miller shared this video of the raccoon making himself comfortable at her aunt’s Ballard home, with the animal even pulling off an impressive sideways roll before jumping back up on his feet.

Videos of Jimothy began going viral on social media this month and he quickly amassed an online cult following, including an entire subreddit dedicated to discussions, memes and art.

However, according to Miller, Jimothy’s suspected father, named Danny DeVito by locals and seen in this footage, “has lived in Ballard for years.”
