A Michigan mother of six had just returned from a trip to China with her two adopted daughters — calling it one of the "funniest and coolest" experiences of her life — when her recently laid-off husband shot and killed the entire family before setting the house on fire and turning the gun on himself, authorities say.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, was identified as the suspect in the murder-suicide that left all six children dead, ranging in age from 5 to 15. His employment as a national vice president at the American Heart Association ended earlier this month. Days later, the family was gone.

Authorities say the fire was intentionally set in numerous places throughout the home. The family pets also perished. Amanda Karolkiewicz's final TikTok post, made just days before, read: "We are so ready to be home sweet home!"
