MEET THE FIRST IGBO CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON IN NIGERIA!
Emeritus Professor Fabian Anene Ositadinma Udekwu ?(pictured) was the first fully certified cardiothoracic surgeon in Nigeria.
Originally from Enugwu Agidi, Anambra State, Igboland.
The first open-heart surgery in West Africa was performed by him in 1974.
He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the International College of Surgeons and the West African College of Surgeons.
Udekwu was an avid sportsman, playing football and tennis throughout his life.
On 28 April 1956 Udekwu was married to Miss Anna Brita Bystrom. The had 10 children.
All his 10 children are medical doctors in the USA today.
He said he wouldn't train any of his child/children who refused to study Medicine.
He was born in 1928 and died in 2006 (at the age of 78).
