There is a mass-ignorance about Islam in the North as there is in the South but using Islam for violence is predominant in the North. It's a problem that we know and they Northern scholars and leaders must address thoroughly and ensure it never happens again. While serving in Kano, we were thoroughly warned against offending any native specifically because of the possibility of accusing any of us of committing blasphemy. If anyone is accused of such, all Sharī'ah and all principles of Sharī'ah are often immediately jettisoned and jungle justice would take a full swing. This is the problem with the North. It's not Sharī'ah, it is ignorance. The mob action, the accusations, lack of investigation and lack of respect for constituted authorities make it worse. It is even more worsened when learned people and some leaders from the North support such mob actions and promote it by means of justifying it or using it to threaten others against abusing Islam.
The action itself is big blasphemy and worse abuse against Allah and Islam. It is a bastardization of all that Islam teaches and stands for. It is certainly not the Sharī'ah and certainly not the objective of the Sharī'ah.
I am puzzled as to why Nigerian lawmakers have never really taken up such matters at the National Assembly, inaugurate committees to investigate them and ensure that culprits are arrested and punished. If it's beyond the States, it shouldn't be beyond the Federal government and yes, the Muslim lawmakers should be the ones championing it because in this case, Islam and innocent Muslims are the victims. They are the ones whose names have been used to commit such heinous crimes.
The murder of the young lady in Sokoto should be the last of it, hopefully. I pray those who commit the act and those who support them meet the divine justice of Almighty Allah.
