In 2001, actor Mark Ruffalo woke up in the middle of the night from a dream that he had a brain tumor.

He had no symptoms at all. But the dream disturbed him enough to ask the doctor on his film set to check.

The next day, a scan showed a tumor the size of a golf ball behind his left ear.

The tumor was benign, but it was pressing on a facial nerve and had to be removed. Doctors warned him the surgery could leave him deaf, paralyzed on one side of his face, or both.

There was one more problem. His wife was about to give birth to their first child.

So Mark said nothing. He kept the diagnosis from his wife until a week after their son was born. When he finally told her, she thought he was joking.

A few weeks later, surgeons removed the tumor. He woke up with the left side of his face frozen and no hearing in his left ear.

His face took almost a year to recover. His hearing never did. Mark Ruffalo has been deaf in his left ear ever since.
