This is the kind of "ingenuity" Poles remember when they hear the glorification of these organizations. It is why President Karol Nawrocki revoked the Order of the White Eagle from President Zelensky after Ukraine named a military unit after the "Heroes of the UPA". Poles will never accept the rehabilitation of people who carried out the systematic, sadistic slaughter of tens of thousands of Polish civilians - women, children, entire villages, often with methods designed to maximize suffering.
You can be a Ukrainian with whom a Pole can sit down, have a beer, and build a shared future against our common threats. Or you can defend the legacy of the UPA and the worldview that made such crimes possible. Those are two very different paths.
The true heroes of Ukraine today are the soldiers fighting on the front lines against Russian aggression, defending their homes, their families, and their right to exist as a free nation. Those are the men and women who deserve to be glorified by Ukrainians and respected by Poles. Both our nations suffered terribly under Soviet terror. Let's honor the real defenders of freedom together, not the butchers of the past.
