“Like a Prayer” was written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard, and its music video became one of the biggest controversies of Madonna's career. In early 1989, Pepsi signed Madonna to a $5 million endorsement deal that included a television commercial featuring the new song and sponsorship of her upcoming world tour. The two-minute “Make a Wish” commercial premiered in March, but Madonna's separate music video sparked outrage over its provocative religious imagery, including burning crosses and the depiction of a Black saint.

Pepsi eventually cancelled the campaign and withdrew its sponsorship of Madonna's tour, but allowed her to keep the $5 million she had been paid. The commercial had aired twice in the United States before being pulled, while continuing to receive attention internationally. The Vatican and Pope John Paul II condemned the religious imagery in the music video and called for a boycott of Pepsi and its subsidiaries. The controversy generated enormous publicity for “Like a Prayer,” which became Madonna's seventh No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
