THOUGHTS: How can video games evolve beyond aesthetics and smoothness of interaction?🚀
For generations, we have such exponential advancing tech yet such primitive gameplay development, both in linear and open world games. The problem is, there’s hardly any advancement in gameplay and mechanics.
✅Let me have the freedom to choose, and I don’t mean whether I can ride a horse or a camel or using magic or melee or ranged combat or picking dialogue options
✅Give Lara Croft or Kratos or Nathan Drake or Ezio a choice between using a rope that I can attach anywhere to pave my way across a mountain, or develop my skills in parkour organically throughout the game to make it through an obstacle/platforming section, or wait till I get near the end to be able to fly across and entirely surpass it.
✅Let Resident Evil characters either solve a puzzle or blow open a door with a rocket launcher or just hop over from a window
✅Create mechanics that allow me to break the game in a way that makes it even more interesting, and customize my own challenge, not through a drop down menu or skill points, but actual intellect and utilization of an environment
✅Allow me to face consequences, as in choosing to be violent deters people with certain side quests from me, or being late to solve a quest will make it disappear because someone else did it (in game or online) or let the course of the game and its multiple ending run based on many factors rather than one checklist I can find online
✅There’s so much talk of “realism”, but reality allows even the average person to take freedoms. Why can’t I pry open a code-locked door when I have weapons that can level a whole bioweapon? Why can’t I stack up items and hop over a wall, instead of finding the key pieces? I know the answer is “because it’s a game” but that game can be way more
✅Let Joel and Ellie use those beautiful rope mechanics in more than just once with a generator cable. Let me put those great rope physics to good use and customize my path forward, and let players feel rewarded by discovering that they can get to make their own unique experience that few others can think of
✅Wouldn’t it be amazing if you ran out of ammo, that you’d throw whatever object that’s next you onto your attacker? Isn’t that how it works in real life if you were attacked? Realism isn’t just about human drama, accurate physical representation and visuals. It can be integrated into gameplay
✅There’s an upcoming game EXODUS @ArchetypeEnt that promises that time dilation as a result from choosing whether to use time gates will cause people you know to age or perish as time will run much slower for you. That’s genius design that I hope would feel as natural and as unpredictable as it sounds
✅I’m genuinely tired of gameplay consisting of just skill points and menus.
✅Let me start off as a novice Assassin, and the more I play, the more I try some moves, the better I get at them. The more I run around, the better I get at parkour, the more I sharpen my blade or clean my weapons, the better I become at them. Organic growth.
✅We are 4 years into a new generation and not a single AAA game meaningfully employed any real puzzles, platforming and parkour. Everything is all about combat and the “coolest” thing you get is Souls-like, Rogue-like or another RPG with random species or magic/tech that function exactly the same. It’s just another overused gameplay mechanic
I couldn’t care less about resolution, frame rate, photo realism and controller haptics or how accurately a game represents people, when the game ultimately is not fun to play. Sadly, more often than not, gameplay takes the backseat in favor of these gimmicks used as a selling point.
I’m not against great visuals. In fact, when we pay $500 for new consoles and $70 per game, the least you can expect is a significant leap. But it shouldn’t be the only leap.
