When I was driving Keke to make a living, I had a total mind shift.

For a fact, I was saving ₦10,000 on a daily basis. This ₦10,000 was savings not total profit.

Where was my route ? Agege to Abule Egba at ₦100 per passenger.

I planned myself so well that it never looked like I was working.

My elder brother, his family, my step mom. Nobody knew I had a keke that I drive.

It was then I got to understand that if you don't create what the poor can consume or if you don't render a service that the poor can afford then you may not be as rich as you can.

Take for instance, I don't think Dangote makes ₦300 profit on a ₦500 pack of Sugar. All he leverages on is the volume of packs of sugar he produces.

Yet, who are his regular customers? You, me, the poorer than us.

While I will not even go against or support the Guest lady on the Àkàrà, kulikuli and Àgbàdo comment, I'll joyfully remind you that it is on this Social Media that someone packaged "Akara crunchy" for us. I simply translated it to "Èèrùn àkàrà" (the remnants from akara)

A few months ago, I was with a friend in Idumota and we stopped to buy original Lagos street food.

It was some Igbo guys that sold us fried yam, akara and plantain, we bought up to ₦6000.

Little did I know that those guys were strategic enough to have up to 6 stands and all were filled with buyers. Possibly, these guys could be graduates too.

When we pick up a hustle like driving Keke, selling akara or ogi for survival, we often stay grounded there for just one reason ; THE PROFIT WILL MAKE YOU MORE MONEY THAN DOING A 9 TO 5.

I am not forcing any opinion on anybody but my reality came to a shock when I met a POS operator at Berger bus stop.

I said I want to withdraw ₦200k and he told me he will get a service charge of ₦5000.

Curiosity made me ask how much he makes on average in a day and he was kind to tell me that on a bad day he makes ₦30k.

Why all this ṣàlàyé?

Nigeria is a poor country, forget the luxury you see everywhere.

If you want to prove me wrong, ask yourself how many recently released ORIGINAL NIKE or ADIDAS shoes are in Nigeria.

You have to understand that you have to create the market for the poor to be rich.

Like my mother will tell me :

She will say, whenever you eventually go to China, if you really want to make money, produce anything that anyone can hawk in Lagos.

Akara o, Àgbàdo o, Puff puff o, I will gladly sell if I will make money independently from it.....

I was on a train in Tokyo. We stopped between stations. Announcement in Japanese, then in English: "We apologize for the delay. We will resume shortly."

The delay was maybe 3 minutes. Not a big deal.

When the train started moving again, another announcement: "We sincerely apologize for the delay. We were stopped for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. This is unacceptable. Thank you for your patience."

Three minutes and twenty seconds. They measured it exactly. And called it unacceptable.

When I got off at my stop, there were station staff on the platform bowing and handing out delay certificates.

I took one out of curiosity. It was an official document stating that the train had been delayed by 3 minutes and 20 seconds, signed and stamped.

The staff member said in English "for your employer. So they know the delay was not your fault."

I said I'm a tourist, I don't need it. He looked confused. "But the delay affected you. You deserve an apology."

Three minutes. They were treating a three-minute delay like a major incident.

Later I mentioned this to a Japanese friend. They said "oh yes, delay certificates are normal. Trains are supposed to be exactly on time. If they are late, they must apologize."

I said three minutes isn't late, it's nothing. My friend said "in Japan, three minutes is late. On time means on time. Not approximately on time."

They said the train company probably investigated why there was a 3-minute delay. "They will find the cause and fix it so it doesn't happen again."

I kept the certificate. It's framed in my apartment now. A reminder that somewhere in the world, people care about three minutes.

I once hired a dispatch rider who almost stole my business.

In 2022, Austin called me after seeing my advert in a logistics WhatsApp group.
To prove he was serious, I traveled from Ajah to Epe to meet him.
I met him and his wife in a one-room face-me-I-face-you house.

Life was not perfect for me either, but I could see clearlythis man needed the job.
So I did what I always do.
I gave him hope.
I told him
“Work hard, I will pay you well. I will feed you when I can, and one day, the bike could even become yours.”

He started the job.
And for the first week?
Perfect.
Fast. Reliable. Respectful. Honest.
But experience has taught me something: That phase never lasts.

Then I landed a contract with a cream factory.
Big opportunity.
I handled the clients.
Austin handled deliveries.
Everything looked set.
3 days later,

They called me:
“We’re no longer interested.”
Then they blocked me.
No explanation.
Nothing.
I was shocked but I moved on.

A week later, I got a call from the police station. (Ajah police station Ajuwe Thomas Estate)
Austin had been arrested for passing one-way.
I went to bail him out.
That’s when I saw it!

He was still delivering for the same company that cut me off.
I dug deeper.
And the truth hit me hard:
Austin told them he had bought the bike from me.,
That he no longer worked for me.,
Then he offered them a cheaper deal.
He did not just just leave.
He replaced me.
The only reason everything didn’t fully collapse?

When he got arrested, his phone was off.
The company had no choice but to call the number on the dispatch box,
My number.
That’s how everything came back to light.
I had to involve the police.
Recovered what was mine.
Sacked him immediately.

And that day, I learned something every logistics business owner must understand:

You will NEVER have a perfect dispatch rider.
Stop chasing loyalty.
Start building systems.
Have backup riders
Control your client relationships
Track your operations
Protect your assets

Because in Lagos logistics?
If your business depends on one rider,
You do not have a business. You have a risk.
