IRC funded PhD Candidate @UL | Conducting meta-analytic and experimental investigations of resistance exercise effects on anxiety and depressive symptoms
New publication from my doctoral research on #exercise for #depression is out in Psychiatry Research!
Our findings support resistance exercise training as a promising treatment for subclinical/mild depression 🏋️♀️🧠

New publication from my doctoral research on #exercise for symptoms of #depression is out in MSSE!
A single resistance exercise session can noticeably reduce elevated depressed mood state by 10-minutes post-session.🏋️🧠

Brief summary of findings below.
3/3
➡️Aerobic exercise remains the most well-supported exercise mode for reducing depressed mood state, but these early findings indicate that resistance exercise is a possible alternative.
2/3
➡️Sub-analyses revealed large, potentially meaningful/noticeable effects of resistance exercise in participants with elevated pre-session symptoms, indicating that the therapeutic benefits of using resistance exercise to manage elevated depressed mood state are possible.🏋🧠
1/3
➡️Single sessions of resistance exercise or quiet rest resulted in similar reductions in depressed mood state (i.e., feeling less sad, empty, lonely, gloomy) by 10-minutes post-session among a sample with low pre-session symptoms (and therefore little room for improvement).
Exciting to present our RCT findings at the @ACSMNews conference in Atlanta! 🇺🇸
This research of #resistancetraining for symptoms of #anxiety and #depression in #anxious young #women was well-received, highlighting interest in healthful alternative and augmentative therapies!
Delighted to share with you all my first PhD study on the associations of expected and observed psychological responses to acute resistance exercise. Thank you very much to my co-authors for their expertise and contributions.

Mental health Monday: Sometimes the greatest gift you can give someone is a non-judgemental listening ear. Seeking help for a mental health condition takes bravery and courage and when it is met with an empathetic response it can be really powerful. #MindYourMind
Happy to present the preliminary findings of our ongoing experimental work at the @E_C_S_S conference in Glasgow 🏴
Our early findings suggest that mod-high AND low intensity RET can induce clinically-meaningful reductions in depressive symptoms among anxious young adult women.
Proud to have presented our promising preliminary findings at the @E_C_S_S in Glasgow! I presented our results from our RCT on the effects of resistance exercise training on worry and anxiety symptoms amongst young women with AGAD! @mph8@MarkLyonsUL@Darragh_Sully
Delighted to get to disseminate my research at @ACSMNews annual conference in Boston yesterday! Thank you very much to the co-authors on the support and guidance in developing this work! @mph8@MarkLyonsUL Jacob Lindheimer Brett Gordon
