What a mess this country is in.
There is a full 17 minute video of this - I can post it shortly.
When Helen O'Rourke was CEO of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, she oversaw the implementation of a policy permitting males to play @LadiesFootball.
It was brought in under a cloak of secrecy, with Ms O'Rourke instructing county officials not to share the details of the policy with grassroots members until after it had been ratified. Not a single player, parent or coach was consulted.
Once the policy had been brought in, attempts made by members to engage with management on this issue were ignored.
When Gaels For Fair Play wrote to her asking to meet and discuss the safeguarding flaws in the policy and its implications for women and girls, we received a solicitor's letter in response that we found sneering, aggressive and dismissive in tone.
So, while Helen O'Rourke is lauded for 'outstanding achievement", we think today of the female Gaelic footballers who were injured by males but felt unable to speak up because they were afraid.
We think of the young girls experiencing distress because they were forced to play against juvenile males with not only a clear competitive advantage but who they were afraid to come into contact with on the field of play in case they got hurt. We think of their parents, who have begged the LGFA to address the blatant safeguarding breach this policy represents and who are desperate to ensure their daughters are not exposed to physical and social harn but who have been ignored.
The man presenting the award to Ms O'Rourke is junior minister for sport Charlie McConalogue. He knows this policy denies women and girls fairness and safety because we met with him and told him so.
Unfortunately, it seems something that should be sacrosanct in sport - safety and fairness - can be sacrificed when it comes to women and girls.
