Dennis Rodman graduated high school at 5 foot 11.

He got cut from the basketball team. He couldn't make the football team either.

He took a job as an overnight janitor at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, sweeping floors and cleaning bathrooms.

Then, between the ages of 19 and 21, he grew eight inches.

His description of it: "I woke up one day and my feet were hanging off the bed. My shoes didn't fit. My pants were too short. It was crazy."

In his book he put it another way. All of a sudden he could do things on a basketball court he'd never dreamed of doing. It was like he had a new body that knew how to do things the old one couldn't.

He tried junior college. He was spectacular on the court and flunked out for bad grades.

Then an assistant coach from a tiny NAIA school called Southeastern Oklahoma State saw him play and took a chance.

Rodman arrived in rural Oklahoma at 22 years old, shy, homesick, and completely out of place.

And that's where the actual story starts.

At a basketball camp the school ran, Rodman met a 13 year old boy named Bryne Rich.

Bryne was not okay. Months earlier he had been out hunting, and while reloading his gun it discharged and killed his best friend.

He had stopped talking to almost everybody.

For whatever reason, he talked to Dennis Rodman.

The two of them became inseparable. And then Bryne brought him home.

The Rich family were farmers in a small town in Oklahoma. John and Pat Rich took one look at this homesick, quiet, enormous kid and made room for him.

Understand what that meant in rural Oklahoma in the early 1980s. Rodman is Black. The Riches are white. That was not a small thing in that place at that time.

They didn't care. He moved in.

He stayed with that family for the three years he played at Southeastern Oklahoma State. Pat Rich has called him her son. The family may have been the ones who gave him the nickname The Worm.

And then he became one of the greatest defensive players in the history of basketball.

Three time NAIA All-American, averaging 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds. Drafted 27th overall in the second round in 1986 by Detroit.

Five NBA championships. Two Defensive Player of the Year awards. Seven straight rebounding titles. Seven All-Defensive First Teams. The NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

His number is retired by the Pistons and by Southeastern Oklahoma State.

When he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011, Rodman didn't talk about rebounds. He cried through most of it. He apologized to his family for his shortcomings as a husband and a father.

And he thanked the men who had been the father he never had.

A kid nobody wanted got eight inches and a family, in that order.
