Minister of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications (@METTJamaica), Hon. Daryl Vaz (@darylvazmp), says he is pleased with the safety measures implemented to protect workers as reconstruction and upgrade works commence on the aircraft apron at the Norman Manley International Airport (@NMIA_Airport) in Kingston.

The project will involve the full reconstruction of NMIA’s 109,270-square-metre operational apron, with Cemex (@CEMEX) serving as the general contractor.

The project is slated for 18 months and is on track to finish within schedule. That matters. Completing a complex airside upgrade on time protects airport operations, gives airlines and travellers certainty, and shows that Jamaica can deliver large infrastructure projects without costly delays.

Just as important is the transfer of knowledge taking place on this site. Jamaican contractors and skilled workers are gaining hands-on experience in large-scale airfield concrete reconstruction, phasing, and international construction standards; expertise that will strengthen our local industry long after this apron is complete.

Proud to have toured the reconstruction of the aircraft apron at Norman Manley International Airport with teams from PACKAL and Cemex.This US$51.85 million (approximately J$8.1 billion) project; part-funded by the Airports Authority of Jamaica; is a major step in modernising NMIA.

Cemex is reconstructing the full 109,270 square-metre operational apron in eight phases so the airport remains fully operational. The work is already supporting 154 jobs; 56 direct and 98 indirect; and four local subcontractors for aggregates, machinery, haulage and electrical works.

I was satisfied with the safety measures in place to protect workers and keep operations running, as well as the quality of the work. This is a state-of-the-art investment that can extend the airport’s capacity and relevance for the next 35 to 40 years and strengthen Jamaica’s tourism product.

We remain focused on delivering the infrastructure our people and our economy need.

Craigmill Bridge Update: The New Craigmill Bridge is Taking Shape!

After delays due to procurement, weather and disasters, we are now seeing the Craigmill Bridge being installed.

What a massive difference! We are moving rapidly from the devastation of the old, collapsed structure to a modern, resilient crossing that will permanently reconnect our communities.

Dedicated teams actively installing both the vital pedestrian footbridge and the main vehicular bridge. This dual-focused approach ensures that our children and residents can walk safely above the riverbanks during heavy rains, while heavy transport infrastructure is securely restored.

A massive thank you to Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Minister Robert Morgan, the National Works Agency, our hardworking contractors, and everyone on the ground pushing this project forward. Most importantly, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the residents of Craig Mill, Belvedere, and White Hall for your incredible patience, resilience, and understanding throughout this challenging process.

With all this, just remember the smartest man ever born wanted to put 5000+ more taxis on the road to bring students to school.

A school bus carries between 30-72 students. Thats one bus carrying the same capacity as 10 - 14 taxis.

Thats 10 to 14 times the fuel and energy cost. The Rural School bus system is more reliable as well.

This morning I joined Education Minister @iamdanadixon for a tour of the Rural School Bus Operation in St Thomas.

I also provided an update regarding the progress being made to procure more buses.
