I can’t lie, I will not even blame Peseiro, the former Super Eagles coach. Rather, I will blame Finidi and the NFF. That man really caused us this pain of missing the World Cup.
Under Peseiro, we did fairly well at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast. At that time, the Super Eagles had a clear pattern and style of play. After losing the AFCON final to Ivory Coast, we were supposed to start solid preparation for the World Cup qualifiers immediately.
You know the problem with Nigerian leadership corruption and mismanagement affect different sectors, including football administration. Back to the main point.
After AFCON 2023, Peseiro was still under contract, and his contract was due to expire around February 2024. He was brought in with the target of reaching the AFCON semi-finals, which he achieved, even going further to the final. After that, the NFF did not renew his contract when it expired.
In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers under Peseiro, he only managed:
Matches: 2
Wins: 0
Draws: 2
Losses: 0
Points: 2 out of 6
(These were against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.)
The remaining qualifier matches were still ahead at that time.
After he left, Finidi George took over (initially as interim, then briefly as head coach). Under Finidi in the World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria recorded:
Nigeria 1–1 South Africa
Benin 2–1 Nigeria
This left Nigeria in a difficult position in the group.
After these results, Finidi resigned shortly after.
Many fans criticize the NFF for poor administration, including issues like unpaid bonuses, poor planning, and instability in coaching appointments, which affect the super eagles team performance and continuity.
Nigeria also still struggles with infrastructure consistency. The main stadiums used for Super Eagles matches include:
Moshood Abiola National Stadium (Abuja) — 60,491 capacity
Godswill Akpabio International Stadium (Uyo) — 30,000 capacity
Teslim Balogun Stadium (Lagos) — 24,325 capacity
However, it is fully accurate to say most of our stadium's don't have , modern renovations, seat's, and basic broadcast setups, and maintenance is often inconsistent.
Features like LED perimeter boards, CCTV coverage, medical facilities, VAR systems, and training/recovery infrastructure don't exist in Nigerian stadiums and are unavailable at all venues,
If we don’t start holding football authorities accountable and improve planning, Nigeria may continue to struggle in future World Cup qualification cycles.
