1. As Spain storms into the FIFA World Cup final, #CutTheClutter looks at the sporting powerhouse, its Islamic history, politics & internal divisions. The episode also explains the country’s complexities & how its leader, PM Pedro Sanchez, is taking on Trump as well as Musk.

2. Spain has never been a simple nation-state. It experienced nearly 8 centuries of Muslim rule, followed by the Christian conquest, the Inquisition, imperial expansion, imperial decline & eventually civil war. Spain also contains multiple historic identities: Castilian, Catalan, Basque, Galician.

3. Of these, perhaps, Catalan, is the most well-known, in part thanks to football — the FCB & its famed rivalry with Real Madrid, traditionally associated with the Spanish https://t.co/Qznc9YDhQs became the cultural expression of Catalan identity. Look at FCB’s motto — Més que un club or more than a club. Catalonians see themselves as a separate country. There have been many rebellions, & a referendum in 2017.

4. The remarkable thing, though, is these rivalries disappear when Spain goes out to play. And the players, no matter where they are from — the starting 11 against France had 4 from Catalonia — are celebrated across the country. This is true not just in football, but also in hockey, basketball, & athletics, all of which Spain dominates.

5. Modern Spain emerged after nearly 40 years of Franco’s dictatorship & took shape with the Constitution of 1978. Within Spanish politics, there’s always been a debate about being subservient to American power & how to position itself. Spain did send soldiers to Afghanistan, but it was a matter of big controversy.

6. Today, Spain has disassociated itself from the Iran war on Day 1, calling it unjust. Spain also said it won’t allow US to use their bases for any ops, which, of course, led to a spat with Trump. Sánchez seems to have positioned Spain differently from many Western govts — he’s pushed for action against Israel, resisted Trump’s call to raise defence spending.
