In sickle cell disease (SCD), a vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) can already compromise blood flow. When you add a fracture, local swelling, pain, and vessel injury can further reduce perfusion. If appropriate hospital care is delayed—especially when traditional treatment replaces urgent medical management—this can lead to:
Severe ischemia of the limb
Compartment syndrome
Tissue necrosis
Secondary infection (including gangrene)
Ultimately amputation, as in this case

“Mummy what happened to my hand?” The sad words of a 10yrs old SCD patient that presented on account of a VOC after sustaining fracture to his left forearm and resorted to traditional care. The forearm became necrotic and was amputated. Know your genotype!, help your children.
