Seventy-two. That is how many separate wounds John Cruickshank had in him, two of them through his lungs, while he lined up a burning flying boat for a second run at a U-boat that had just shot his aircraft to pieces. Most men have one of those wounds and they are finished. He had seventy-two and he pressed the attack.

He was 24, a former bank clerk from Aberdeen, flying a Catalina flying boat out of the Shetland Islands with Coastal Command. The job was the long, freezing, mind-numbing patrol, fourteen hours over the grey Atlantic hunting the U-boats that were strangling Britain. On the 17th of July 1944, far out over empty water, they caught one on the surface, U-361, and Cruickshank took the big slow flying boat down to attack.

The first run failed. The depth charges would not release. Any sane man makes a note and turns for home. Cruickshank swung the aircraft around and came back for a second pass, low and straight, and this time the submarine's gunners were waiting. Flak ripped through the Catalina. It killed the navigator, wounded half the crew, and tore into Cruickshank again and again, those seventy-two wounds, two punching into his lungs, ten into his legs.

And he flew the attack home anyway. Bleeding everywhere, in agony, with the fuselage holed and on fire, he held the aircraft dead level, aimed, and released the depth charges himself. They straddled the U-boat perfectly. It broke apart and sank beneath him.

Then came the part that should have killed him. He collapsed from blood loss, and the wounded co-pilot, who had never landed a Catalina, took the controls for the long flight back. Cruickshank refused the morphine that would have knocked him out, because he knew the man flying needed him. Drifting in and out, he had himself carried back up to the cockpit again and again through the night to help nurse the shot-up aircraft down, and at dawn they got it onto the water safely. He had lost so much blood the doctors said he had no business being alive.

He lived. He took the Victoria Cross from the King, went quietly back to banking after the war, and rarely spoke of it. And he kept on living, and living, and living. John Cruickshank died in 2025 at the age of 105, the last man on earth wearing a Victoria Cross earned in the Second World War. Seventy-two wounds over the Atlantic, and he outlasted every other hero of that war by decades.

Ben Carroll is now Premier of Victoria.
Before you decide what you think about that, you need to know what he was in the room for.

Not alleged. Not rumoured. Documented in IBAC reports, Hansard and court proceedings.

Operation Watts. June 2020. Covert recordings of Minister Adem Somyurek organising industrial-scale branch stacking using parliamentary staff on taxpayer time.

Somyurek dumped from cabinet and expelled from the Labor Party. Two ministers resigned. IBAC found the practices had been approved or condoned by party leadership for decades. Carroll was in cabinet. He stayed.

Operation Daintree. November 2022. Andrews under secret IBAC investigation over $3.4 million in grants to the Health Workers Union on the eve of the 2018 election. Money went to a union-controlled entity established weeks before the grants were sought. Health Department officials objected. Approved anyway. Carroll was in cabinet. He stayed.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Both resigned in 2017 over misuse of parliamentary travel allowances. Brad Battin told Parliament on 17 June 2026 that a Speaker and Deputy Speaker stole money from Parliament and that Labor stole $380,000 from Victorian taxpayers. Carroll was in parliament throughout. He stayed.

Jane Garrett. She refused to sign off on concessions to the United Firefighters Union. Said the deal was wrong. Resigned on principle. Battin told Parliament:

Operation Richmond will show Jane Garrett was right and Daniel Andrews was 100 per cent wrong. Carroll was in cabinet. He did not resign. He stayed.

Operation Richmond. IBAC investigating since 2019 how Andrews, UFU Secretary Peter Marshall and public servant Tony Bates broke the firefighters deadlock. The Supreme Court dismissed a last-minute injunction to block the report. It is about to drop. Battin told Parliament ministers still at the table today would need to be named and publicly apologise.

Carroll was in cabinet throughout. In March 2025, years after Bates became publicly known as a central IBAC figure, Carroll appointed him Acting Secretary of the Department of Education. Made it permanent in August 2025. Bates now runs a $17.8 billion department.

When the report drops Carroll will face one question: why did you appoint a man you knew was under active IBAC investigation to run one of Victoria’s largest departments?
Four IBAC investigations. A Speaker and Deputy Speaker gone. Jane Garrett proven right. An IBAC report about to name ministers. And Carroll was present for all of it.

He is not the man who will clean this up. He is part of the architecture that let it happen.
He is now Premier of Victoria.

None of it is illegal. That’s the problem.

Over the past few months I have published many posts built entirely from primary government data. AEC filings. ASIC extracts. AusTender contracts. Parliamentary registers. Every figure is verifiable. Every source is named.

Here is what the data shows when you put it all together.

The tobacco industry paid $14 million into Australian politics while fighting plain packaging through a fake retailers group. Both parties took the money. The structure they invented became the template every industry uses today.

One company, Pratt Holdings, paid $3 million to both major parties in a single year. It has done the same thing almost every year since 1998. You get one vote every three years.

DoorDash paid $785,000 to the Liberals in the four months before the federal election while publicly opposing Labor’s gig economy laws. The ratio was 8.5 to 1.

The gambling industry paid Labor $899,343 while the gambling advertising ban was under active consideration. They paid the Liberals $819,480 in the same period.

The ban was dropped.

Labor Holdings Pty Ltd has received $322 million since 1998. No donors named. The Liberal equivalent, the Cormack Foundation, has given $9.4 million to the Victorian division. Same architecture.

Different colour.

The Greenfields Foundation lent the Liberal Party $4.25 million. The party has been repaying it for 23 years. The original source of the Foundation’s capital is not visible in any public document.

Vapold Pty Ltd, a 50-year-old Liberal investment vehicle run by the party’s most powerful figures, reported $37.6 million in receipts in a single Victorian election year. The source is not disclosed. The shares are held not beneficially.

The beneficial owner is unknown.

The taxpayer funds all four party think tanks simultaneously through the Department of Finance. $5.5 million since 2018.

You paid for the policy that all four parties are selling you.

The ACTU received $20.7 million from government agencies across the dataset while spending $34.3 million on electoral campaigns. The unions that fund Labor have donated $18.4 million directly to the party.

The loop runs continuously.

A Chinese billionaire whose residency was later cancelled by ASIO on foreign interference grounds donated $5.38 million to both parties over nine years.

Neither party has returned the money.

And Advance Australia — the right’s parallel campaign machine — received $34 million in three years with zero named donors in the required disclosure.

None of it is illegal.

That is the whole point.

The system is not broken. It is working exactly as the people who designed it intended. The disclosure laws have thresholds low enough to hide what matters. The associated entity structures obscure the origin of capital. The think tank grants flow regardless of who governs. The union loop runs automatically. The front groups run the campaigns that the companies cannot run directly.

Every single one of these findings is in a public register. I did not need a whistleblower. I did not need a leak. I needed a spreadsheet and the willingness to read what the government has already published.

The question is not whether this is happening. The data proves it is. The question is whether enough Australians are angry enough to demand it stops.

None of it is illegal. That’s the problem.

The new owners of the Alexandra Standard and The Yea Chronicle will receive $1,280,994 over the next three years in Federal Governments grants money.
The Provincial Press group of Wangaratta, controlled by Hartley Higgins, will receive the bonus million-dollar top up under the Journalism Assistance Fund.
Provincial Press has dozens of publications in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.
The company took over the Standard-Chronicle on July 1, and promptly merged the two papers, with the exception of the front- and back-pages.
The Alexandra-Yea company will receive $68,640 in grants. A $626,340 grant has been approved for Wangaragtta-based newspapers, there is $308,880 for the Regional Media subsidiary in NSW, and the Riverina Media Group is to receive $277,134.
The big winner of the Albanese Govern-ment’s grant has been the Star News Group and associated companies led by Paul Thomas.
His company will receive a total of $4,775,199 over three years.
The Star group includes the Pakenham Gazette, Dandenong Star Journal and associated itles around Berwick and Cran-bourne. That comoany has receibed the tick for $1,736,592.
The MMP Star group, which operates papers in the northern and western suburbs, is to receive $120,120.
The SA Today operation, which has recently taken over titles in Portland, Hamilton, Mildura, Swan Hill and Loddon, has been approved a grant of $2,703,987.
Across at Shepparton, the McPherson family’s group, received approval for a grant of $1,840,410. Their titles include the Seymour Telegraph and Benalla Ensign.
At Kilmore, the Mott family’s North Central Review received news that their application for $85,800 had been authorised.
Although the Motts disposed of the Alexandra and Yea newspapers at the end of the 2025-26 financial year, they are continuing to publish the Review, noting that it was founded by long-time publishers Wally Mott and Bob Yeates.
Bruce Smith, one of the sons of Kilmore Free Press proprietor Jim Smith, was listed as the frontman for the North Central News when it first went to press.
The Journalism Assistance Fund was promoted as a $64 million project by the Albanese Government. Documents released this month show that 184 participants will share in $74,356,100.
Other Victorian recipients are the Adams family’s Shepparton Adviser ($265,980), the Warragul Gazette run by the Hopkins family ($250, 107), the Hyperlocal group led by Sean Car ($150,150), the McCullough family’s Mornington Peninsula News Group ($133,848), the Phillip Island and San Remo Advertiser ($102,960), the Surf Coast Times group ($686,400), and The Westsider community newspaper ($42,900).
The Albanese Government says that it is part-paying the wages of more than 2000 journalists across 184 newsrooms.

• Local Media Pty Ltd, publishers of The Local Paper, resolved not to apply for any Journalism Assistance Fund grant money, funded by taxpapers.

Seven sent Liam Bartlett to Britain to report on record migration. He came back with an hour attacking Pauline Hanson. But One Nation chief of staff James Ashby says that off camera, in the car into Luton, Bartlett turned to him and said the only thing missing from the town was camels. Even the reporter sent to take her down could see what mass migration had done to it. So does Bartlett believe the story he was told to sell, or was the hit simply the job?

Hanson has now leaked the full pitch email from Spotlight producer Luke Mortimer, and it is damning. Seven promised a full hour on Australia's record immigration and on taking back control of who comes to our country. That is not the program they aired.

The real story never made the cut. The boats, the grooming and rape gangs, the terror and crime remaking Britain's towns, none of it. Instead Bartlett changed the subject and went after everyone in the room, from Pauline Hanson to Rupert Lowe to Tommy Robinson.

Ashby laid it all out to Paul Murray on Sky, branding the special a stitch-up that was sold as immigration and delivered as a hit on Pauline's fitness to lead.

And here is what Seven did not disclose. The arm that airs Spotlight, the 7NEWS and 7plus company, banked $5.6 million from Labor's Journalism Assistance Fund, part of more than $11 million to the Seven side. The taxpayer part-funded the very show built to take Pauline Hanson down.

Anika Wells' $67.6 million Journalism Assistance Fund is part paying the wages of more than 2,000 journalists, and more than half the money went to just four ownership groups.

Nine took $16.1 million. Seven's side of the new Southern Cross group took $11.3 million. Crikey, The Conversation, The Saturday Paper and Mamamia are all there.

News Corp, Sky News and The Guardian were barred from even applying. Opinion writing doesn't count as news under the government's own rules. And no funded newsroom ever has to tell its readers.

The fund ran dry in 28 days. One recipient was two days old. Another collapsed five weeks later.

I TOLD YOU - They’re coming for One Nation.

They’re coming for One Nation. And everyone paying attention knows it.

The moment the polls showed Pauline Hanson’s party at 26%, ahead of the Coalition at 19%, every major party war room, every media outlet, and every political operative in the country started sharpening their knives.

Here’s what’s about to happen. They’ll dig through every candidate’s Facebook history looking for a dodgy post from 2015. They’ll find one bloke in one seat who said something stupid at a BBQ and turn it into a week long national scandal. They’ll demand “detailed costings” they’ve never once demanded from Labor or the Liberals. And they’ll run the same headline they’ve run for 30 years: “One Nation is falling apart.”

That’s the playbook. It worked before. They’re banking on it working again.

And honestly? History says they’ve got a case. 22 out of 36 One Nation MPs have walked out of the party over the years. Culleton. Anning. Burston. Latham. Every time the party surged, it tore itself apart from the inside while the establishment sat back and watched.

But here’s what’s different this time. The Coalition has collapsed. The Liberal / National partnership is done. Barnaby Joyce and Cory Bernardi didn’t join One Nation because it was trendy, they joined because they looked at the wreckage of the Liberal Party and saw a dead end. One Nation now has branches in all 151 federal electorates.

And 51% of Australians say the entire political system is fundamentally broken.

The demand isn’t going away. People can’t pay their mortgages. They can’t afford rent. They can’t fill a trolley for under $300. And not one person in the major parties has a real answer.

So yes, the attacks are coming. The gotcha journalism. The pearl clutching. The “concerned” editorials from people who’ve never missed a meal in their lives. Every single hit is designed to do one thing: make you doubt the only party that’s actually threatening the establishment.

Don’t fall for it. They didn’t come after One Nation this hard when it was polling at 5%. They’re coming this hard because it’s polling at 26% and they’re terrified.

The major parties had 30 years to fix housing, wages, migration, and cost of living. They didn’t. They won’t. They can’t, because the system works exactly the way they designed it.

One Nation isn’t perfect. No party is. There’ll be rough edges. There’ll be candidates who stuff up. But the choice isn’t between One Nation and some flawless alternative. The choice is between something that might actually change and a system that is guaranteed not to.

They want you to give up. They want you to go back to voting for the same two parties that got us here. They want One Nation to implode so everything goes back to normal, they’re normal, not yours.

Don’t let them have it.
