@_motherslug One of my favourites since I was a teenager. Just brilliant. I’m glad you’re loving it. I got to meet Alex Cox last July, which was a thrill.
Well that was amazing. Paul Simon, with the great Steve Gadd on drums. Of course they played 50 Ways… and I loved St Judy’s Comet and Rewrite in particular. The entire band were tremendous.
@DEADLINE@clockwork_wb Not quite. There were two BFI screenings - I was at one. And then one at the Barbican which I also attended. In all cases Mark Kermode was in attendance, and Russell was at the Barbican. I believe there was an even earlier screening at an English university but that wasn’t public
@26mfhpod The @BFI showed it once a few years ago. Their copy had the original colours still intact, not faded to pink. So it does exist and is begging for a physical release. It’s quite something, not as intense as the Devils but still impactful.
Plus the news, not just an April Fool prank, that Near Dark will get a UHD release from @synapsefilms. I can soon retire my DVD. So three of my most wished for releases are on the horizon.
First we get the very welcome news that THE DEVILS full cut is coming out via BFI and Warners. And now LAST SUMMER is announced on blu ray. It’s an amazing and unsettling film from Frank and Eleanor Perry, the couple behind The Swimmer, that many thought would never get released
Directors Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani interviewed by Peter Strickland at the PCC. My second viewing of Reflections in a Dead Diamond and I saw so much more detail and meaning this time. A female Diabolik laced with hints of Death in Venice. Brilliant fun.
Warners might finally be relenting on The Devils, as they’ve agreed to a 4K restoration to be shown at Cannes. Does this mean a release of the wonderful uncut version is a step closer? I’ll never forget watching the full version with Ken Russell sitting in the seat behind me.
A cast reunion for MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD. Today’s @BFI IMAX screening of the new 4K restoration was thrilling. Such a good film.
@lizslayed@BFI I know this because I picked up this book a few years ago from a charity shop. And I’ve just learned that it now sells for £150-£200! Btw Seven Pillars of Wisdom is really worth reading if you have the time (it’s long, lots of descriptions of sand…)
@lizslayed@BFI Yeah I love that. Sadly the Aqaba sequence wasn’t shot on location as the city looked too developed, it was filmed in Almeria (same region as many spaghetti westerns!). And Seville stands in for Cairo and Damascus. But almost all the desert sequences were shot where they’re set.
@dunearrival The @ThePCCLondon is great. I’m all for an audience expressing their enjoyment but the superior performative cackling that inflicts cinemas screening older films is a disease.
Laura Dern this evening at the @bfi introducing David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE on what would have been his 80th birthday. She came across so very positive and sweet, with fond memories of working with Lynch. The first time I’ve seen it on the big screen in 19 years.

I’m so glad I was able to see (for the first and last time) Bob Weir at the Royal Albert Hall last June, an extremely rare UK visit, one of his very final performances. I’ve been listening to the Dead since I was a teenager, probably my favourite band.
