College football isn’t popular because it feels like the NFL.

It’s the bands. The students. The campuses. The tailgates. The sense that Saturdays are tied to something bigger than money.

That connection to academia and community is the soul of the sport.

If college football becomes a professionalized cash machine that asks fans to keep paying more while stripping away what made it special, it misses the point even more than Michael Bay missed the point in Pearl Harbor.

And Pearl Harbor sucks.

So does losing the essence of college sports.
