#QEPD 💔
In the span of a few years, I watched Celine's father die on a gurney, my mother died, my mother-in-law died, my father died; last month I had to put down my 19yr-old cat. Last Friday, I'd agreed to a divorce from the love of my life, & later that day, my brother died.
Been trying to process devastating news about Grant. Gutted. Worked w/him for 20yrs. Last convo in Doha wasn’t even about soccer. Was an incredibly touching moment by him to share kind words to me during a difficult time. That’s who he was. Thinking of Celine and entire fam 💔💔
I remember telling Grant and others that "Who says we're gonna miss our families on Thanksgiving? We have our soccer family today."
Today we lost a member of our soccer family.
My condolences go out to his wife, Dr Celine Gounder, and the entire soccer community.
I am just heartbroken to hear about the passing of Grant Wahl.
Grant was not just a dedicated and extremely talented journalist, but more importantly, a kind person.
If you want a read a classic Grant Wahl column, go read his epic Sports Illustrated article on Bora. (1/4)
He had his Grant "uniform" on with a black t-shirt, black skinny pants and a cap.
The previous week, US Soccer and MLS hosted the American soccer media at a Thanksgiving luncheon at the swanky Flying Carpet restaurant inside the Torch Hotel adjacent to Khalifa Stadium.
Not Grant.
Grant was a champion for women's soccer. His dedication to covering the women's game helped bring equality to the game.
I last saw Grant a little over a week ago in Al Gharafa at the USMNT training facility prior to the Netherlands game.
Bora Milutinovic taking China to the 2002 World Cup. Just a brilliant piece and at the time he was just 27.
Grant spoke Spanish and was a fan of the US Hispanic soccer community. On his podcast, he brought in guests like former ESPN Deportes play by play legend Luis Tapia (2)
