@TallyYoh @mattstruebig @m_ddlvoigt @NicolasJDeere @JMJTravis @BocediGreta @WildlifeImpact @marcancrenaz @emeijaard @SergeWich Absolutely, maintaining and restoring the natural forest areas within estates is key, as well as supplement planting food trees to provide additional resources. @PongoAlliance are doing great work in this area!!
1/6 Hi I’m Dave! I’m a third year PhD student at @DICE_Kent@KentUni, using models to investigate how 🦧 use human modified landscapes across in Borneo. #DICECON21#LandSea1
Many thanks to my supervisors:
@mattstruebig, Dr Tatyana Humle and @m_ddlvoigt
@Mic_Lo1 That’s an interesting question, one aspect we’re looking into is differences in hunting/conflict killings which do seem to vary across the range. As🦧have long and slow life histories, any offtake will have big impacts on population dynamics, particularly in fragmented landscape.
6/6 Watch this space for updates on the project!
Thanks to co-authors and funders!
@mattstruebig Tanya Humle @m_ddlvoigt @NicolasJDeere @JMJTravis @BocediGreta Stephen Palmer @WildlifeImpact @marcancrenaz @emeijaard @SergeWich
Any Questions?
#DICECON21#LandSea1
5/6 We are now applying #RangeShifter across the entire Bornean 🦧 range, aiming to see how current levels of fragmentation and pressure from humans may affect 🦧 connectivity and population dynamics in the future

Can #PalmOil certification create landscapes that work for people and orangutans? Using #RangeShifter, an individual based model and our current understanding of 🦧ecology, we investigated this question. Check out our new OA paper here -> https://t.co/TOlz6e0xRw
However, the success of sustainable certification at supporting 🦧 populations will rely on reducing hunting and promoting peaceful co-existence between orangutans and people.
Using 3 dimensional measures of forest structure to prioritise restoration for tropical mammals... cutting edge science by @NicolasJDeere et al. @DICE_Kent. Well worth a read!!
@GrantRosoman Thanks for the great question. Yes, but indirectly: we’re investigating various management scenarios, one of them being the HCS approach.
