A message I want to share with adults who work with #ADHD kids is: pushing them the way that you push neurotypical kids harms them for life.
Here’s what I mean.
When I start working clinically with an adult who has ADHD, one of the first things we do /1
Working with autistic clients in therapy, a 🧵
I see lots of cpd on working with autistic people. Language like "complex" is commonplace. I want to say a few words about my experience as an autistic client and therapist.

My wife: Honey, I'm out of spoons.
Me, terminally online: I'm sorry you're feeling that way, what can I do for-
My wife: No I mean we're out of clean spoons, take some out of the dishwasher and rinse them so we can set the table.
Despite basic errors in the police report and documented mental impairment, Snohomish County prosecutors have moved forward with felony assault charges against an 11-year old autistic child in Everett claiming she knowingly assaulted 2 deputies

in my experience, ADHD is a lot of mentally yelling at yourself to DO something to do ANYTHING while you sit with absolutely no expression on your face, scrolling through your phone or continuing to play a game or whatever as if you have no control over your body
The academy actively tells us to disclose to secure supports, but disclosure is such a fraught process. Especially for those who have mental health conditions. Accommodations are not a hand out. Mental health support is important for ALL students, staff, and faculty.
Disabled students deserve disabled mentors and advisors. It is so incredibly stressful to ask an able bodied mentor for advice when you're worried that said discussion might be grounds for dismissal from the program. 1/8
The reason almost every talk I give includes a slide which says “if you are an autism professional & haven’t read #Neurotribes, please do” is because if you don’t know the history, you can’t hope to understand the issues & controversies in contemporary autistic community
Anybody in #ot#os interested and in sleep & looking for a #postdoc I'm not affiliated in any way but the project looks pretty cool and the occupational lens could surely add something.

I came across this quote by the Indian political activist. Arundhati Roy, and thought of how it summed up the situation of non-speaking autistics.
"There is no such thing as the voiceless. There are only the deliberately silenced or the preferably unheard. "
Can I piggyback and add...Neurodivergent needs are neurotypical needs. It's just that the environments built for neurotypical ways of meeting needs can make it more difficult for neurodivergent folx to meet theirs.
It’s officially April. You may have heard that April is considered “Autism Month” to many people.
A few gentle reminders to non-Autistic people, as we jump into this month:
@BillWongOT True. It would be interesting to think about other models for conferences that were more supportive of including the folks we work with. We claim "client-centeredness" as a chief value, and we could definitely embrace it more in this area.
Watching more #AOTAInspire21 this morning and have some thoughts. Won't share most of them because Twitter but the general takeaway is...
Start listening to #ActuallyAutistic people. #OT could be great partners and allies of neurodivergent communities, but aren't there yet. 1/
@BillWongOT We are practitioners of meaningful activity, because we believe meaning makes life better. The NT system prioritizes it's version of "meaningful" over others. Until that changes, I don't know how we create authentically inclusive spaces in OT.
