A 54-year-old farmer in the Steynsrus district of the Free State counted 186 Merino sheep on his Rietvlei farm on Friday. By Saturday morning 45 were gone; 16 breeding ewes and 29 lambs, valued at R151 000.

Some of the missing animals were later found scattered along the Steynsrus-Arlington gravel road with their throats slit open. The rest simply vanished.

This is not “petty theft.” This is another calculated way to cripple South African farmers. You steal the productive ewes that produce the next generation. You slaughter lambs that represent future income. You leave the carcasses dumped along a public road like a message. The farmer is left staring at a hole in his flock that will take years and tens of thousands of rands to fill, while the syndicates walk away with meat, skins, and the knowledge that the system will shrug.

Stock theft has been turned into a slow-motion weapon. Every stolen ewe is a future lamb that never arrives. Every slit throat is a reminder that the people who feed the country are fair game. The police open a docket. The farmer absorbs the loss. The next count will be even lower.

This is how you break commercial agriculture without firing a shot at the farmer himself. You bleed the flock until the farm is no longer viable. Then you wait for the next one.
