Kenyan lawyer and academic Prof PLO Lumumba rebuked event organisers after they asked him to stop addressing an audience simply because a governor was arriving.
Lumumba questioned whether the arrival of one politician was more important than the discussion taking place, arguing that this culture of excessive reverence for public officials is one of the things holding Africa back.

The governor in question was Kisumu County Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, the father of Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.
Lumumba’s protest highlighted a broader African problem of how public servants are too often treated like royalty instead of employees of the people.

The new appointed & founder CEO of the National Infrastructure Fund, James Mworia (@MworiaJ) afforded us a good laugh at the Africa Capital Week 2026 (@AfCW2026) when he presented a physical copy of the Fund's statement to dispel fears that the money from partial divestitures from Kenya Pipeline & Safaricom were never credited to the account.

Mworia says he is banking on the country's fast growing domestic capital pools, notably the now > Kes 3.0 trillion held by pension funds, to unlock financing for infrastructure needs.

My question to him was how he will navigate the asset-liability (mis)match headache that many fund managers grapple with given the nature of infrastructure as an asset class.

He makes the following points:

· His idea for circumventing asset-liability (mis)match concerns is creating a sub-fund within the National Infrastructure Fund (i.e. the NIF Infrastructure Development Fund) that can then be listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange

· The listing of the NIF Infrastructure Development Fund on the bourse will then address the liquidity headache because it will allow investors to come in & exist

· The listed NIF Infrastructure Development Fund will also help address the ease with which investors can come into strategic national infrastructure undertakings without evoking the risk of being deemed to have made entry via the back route (i.e. because a listed vehicle is then open to all investors)

On Tata Chemicals Factory in Magadi, we need to have a national conversation:

1. In the entire Maa Nation (Kajiado, Narok, Laikipia & Samburu), which one private company employs thousands, supplies water & provide health services to hundreds of thousands more?

2. Or if it or any other company choose to set up a soda ash finishing factory in Magadi, do we have sufficient water, power & road infrastructure?

3. Kenyans took over coffee & tea growing, why are we still exporting raw to the rest of the world? How come 62 Years after independence, you can’t find Made in Kenya tea or coffee in Europe or US? Instead, TWININGS of England is world leader in premium teas & Nestlé of Switzerland is world leader in coffee & cocoa!

4. TATA Group, a dual British & Indian company, is one of the biggest companies in the world. What message will we be sending to similar multinational conglomerates?

5. And we had our local manufacturing companies: Raymond’s, KENKNIT, KICOMI, Mumias et al. They all died.
