Government scientists have confirmed that El Niño arrived in June, coinciding with the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. They anticipate a below-average season in 2026, predicting eight to 14 named storms and one to three major hurricanes.
Historically, this would be considered good news for property insurers: however, industry experts, including insurance brokers, catastrophe modelers, and analysts, indicate that this is becoming less certain and payouts may be the same - partly due to increase home values and construciton costs.

In 2025, no Hurricanes made landfall, yet the average annual premium is projected to increase by 4%, reaching approximately $3,057 this year. This follows a significant jump of 12% in 2025, as reported by Insurify, an online insurance comparison site.
This expected gain comes after several years of steep growth in rates. Since 2021, premiums have surged by 46%, which is roughly three times the rate of inflation.

LA Fire Survivors Got a Rude Surprise That Could Hit More Americans
Since the 1990s, American homes have faced a growing issue of underinsurance. Research indicates that many home insurance policies do not guarantee total replacement, contrary to public belief.
Historically, most US home insurance policies included a guaranteed replacement clause, ensuring coverage regardless of cost. However, this changed as homes became larger and more expensive. The shift to replacement-cost-value coverage, which limits the insurer's payout, has become more common. Rising construction costs and an increase in natural disasters have made the guaranteed replacement clause less viable and insurers have adopted capped payouts.
Review your policy of insurance and get the coverage that you need.

True Crime Meets Claims: How a Stolen 1930s Patek Phillippe Watch Was Recovered by the FBI
My firm and I assist clients and dealers with watch, jewelry and art fraud, theft and insurance claims. This video and article detail the "interesting" theft of a number of Patek Phillippe watches from a collector who apparently had these watches stored in a bank. The watches were switched /stolen, and the thieves held a watch for 7-8 years prior to attempting to sell it. This watch was registered, and the insurance company had paid out on this claim. The insurer was able to get the watch back as it had paid ~ $175,000 for the claim.
I wonder what the current market value of the watch would be now. The watch is likely currently worth multiples of the amount the watch was insured for 8 years ago.

I am a watch and art enthusiast and collector, and my firm and I assist clients and dealers with watch, jewelry and art fraud, theft, and insurance claims. This is good discussion and article about the rise of fraud and claims and why the Watch Register and Art Register are important.
In this era of “superfakes,” where it is claimed that 10% of the 40 million fake watches produced each year are so convincing as to be effectively undetectable as counterfeits, unless inspected by the manufacturer or an authorized expert - many do not know that they have purchased a stolen or fake watch until it is sent in for service. Collectors, Insurers, and dealers often struggle to distinguish fraudulent stolen or counterfeit items, and this can come back to the policy holder and/or insurer.

Interesting article about the "lost art" of negotiating and that litigating is all about negotiations. This art often gets lost with spreadsheets, reports, actuaries, and the day-to-day disputes that we seen when cases are litigated.
The article proposes that questions that both the claim professional and counsel should be asking—at every step—should include:
Are we framing the story the right way?
Are we using evidence to anchor expectations?
Are we advocating for our negotiation positions clearly and persuasively?
Often we cannot even get in touch with someone on the other side or negotiations get "shut down" unless the other side deems it is ready to commence discussions. This is unfortunate, as the above would likely provide for better results for clients on both sides of the V.
