“Today, as we gather to remember and to honour those ancestors, we do so not merely as an act of commemoration, but as an act of reckoning and repair. We come as representatives of a continent and a diaspora united in the pursuit of justice—justice that has been deferred for centuries, but which can no longer be denied […]
Our African Union Assembly has now extended the 2025 Theme of the Year into a Decade of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations, covering 2026 to 2035. This is not symbolic; it is operational. It means sustained funding for expert mechanisms, integration of reparations into national
policies and school curricula, diplomatic engagement at the United Nations, and closer coordination with African diaspora communities worldwide.
The Assembly has also designated 30 November as the African Day of African Martyrs and Victims of
the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Colonisation, and Apartheid, ensuring that we honour our ancestors not once, but annually, and that each generation inherits the responsibility to continue the struggle. I call for a commemoration at our site here every year on that date."
