Grease: The Thrift-Store Pants That Stole the Show

When Olivia Newton-John walked onto the set of Grease dressed as the new Sandy, she was wearing an outfit that would become one of the most recognizable in movie history.

But those famous black “leather” pants weren’t leather.

They weren’t even new.

Costume designer Albert Wolsky had found the skin-tight vintage pants in a thrift store. They were actually from the 1950s, exactly the period he was trying to capture for the film.

There was just one problem.

The zipper was broken.

There was only one pair, and because the pants were already vintage, Wolsky didn’t want to risk damaging them by replacing it.

So every morning Olivia wore them for filming, the wardrobe department had to sew her into the pants.

Olivia later joked that her immediate concern was a practical one: What was she supposed to do if she needed to go to the bathroom? 😂

The transformation worked.

When she appeared on set in Sandy’s black pants, leather jacket, red heels and newly curled hair, Olivia remembered everyone stopping. Until then, the cast had known her as sweet, wholesome Sandy.

Suddenly, she was the Sandy from the film’s unforgettable finale.

Olivia kept the costume after Grease. More than four decades later, in 2019, she put pieces of it up for auction to raise money for her cancer wellness and research center.

The leather jacket sold for $243,200.

And those secondhand 1950s pants—with the zipper still broken—sold for $162,500.

Together, the two pieces brought $405,700.

Not bad for a pair of thrift-store pants that couldn’t even zip. ❤️
