It was great talking to Superintendent Lewis of @NOLAPSchools for this podcast that will run next week--here's a short clip of my conversation with him.
Henderson Lewis tells us why every superintendent should care about the education of youth in confinement. In this #Edupalooza Talks, he provides deep insight on how his work ensures all students get the education they deserve.

We are thrilled to report that both chambers of the Maryland legislature voted to override Governor Hogan’s veto and pass the Juvenile Restoration Act! Life without parole is no longer a sentencing option for children in Maryland. #NoChildIsBornBad
We are extremely disappointed in Governor Hogan’s decision to veto the Juvenile Restoration Act, which passed by large majorities in both chambers of the Maryland legislature. We will fight to override this veto and ensure that life without parole for children is abolished in MD.
@dwaynebetts thank you for sharing Lucille Clifton's poem w/ young people held in confinement, for partnering w/ @BreakFree_Ed, and for encouraging others to share their words. This is a chance to speak directly to locked up kids, to let them know you care, that they matter.
My poets out there, we need y'all help on this one. Everyday we'll be sending these out. And all you have to do is record a poem on your phone, say some words of encouragement, and email it to me at [email protected]. Recordings can be as short as three minutes. Be heard!

Wouldn't it be great if all urban school district superintendents took this amount of pride in helping to improve the education of students in secure facilities. Thank you @nolasupt for investing in jj system involved students in NOLA and supporting the work of @TravisHillNOLA

Some good, clear-cutting news from Massachusetts here: raising the age can go hand-in-hand w/ shrinking the overall # of young people detained, and reduced juvenile crime - https://t.co/xX6GhpgpJi
Well, this is some pretty bad news. Early on the # of kids locked up went down due to Covid; sadly, that's not holding true; even worse, kids of color getting the worst of it as the system holds onto kids who should be going home - https://t.co/u6d4nW4myY
Well, this is pretty great news -- I sure hope it sticks. Congress clinches deal to restore Pell grants for prisoners 26 years after ban https://t.co/XVOjbm8GKz via @politico
