David Lereah is President, United We Age. He authored The Power of Positive Aging and believes positivity and humor are the best prescriptions for joyful aging.
The best advice no one gave me:
1. Stop waiting for the right time. It’s now.
2. Never underestimate the power of walking away from negativity.
3. Life is short, don’t waste it trying to please everyone
4. A little curiosity and a good sense of humor will keep you young.
What’s one “old rule” about aging you refuse to follow. Mine is— meditation and mindfulness are for younger generations. New rule: I meditate daily— sometimes on purpose, sometimes because I fell asleep.
I'm going to post the secret to growing old joyfully. Many people know the secret but few practice it regularly. It's an old home remedy like chicken soap for colds or saltwater for a sore throat. Of course, we're talking about humor. As they say, laughter is the best medicine.
I'm constantly being reminded that I'm aging. Sleeping has become a journey with urinating before bed, visiting the porcelain pot at 3 am, and when I awake at 7 am. An enlarged prostate was not on my birthday list for becoming a senior citizen, but it's my reality. Anyone relate?
The more you say an affirmation, the more it imposes itself into your subconscious, where is begins to become reality. For an older person stressed out about aging, repeat the affirmation: "I feel good about being a live" a couple of times per day. Please retweet to help a senior
Surviving a heart attack is probably the scariest wake up call of all. For me it was when I was about to go outside and my wife stopped me and said, “are you really going to reveal yourself to humanity wearing black socks with sandals?
I went sockless the rest of the day.
Society perceives seniors as over the hill; they are on the downside of life. But we’ve lived a full life of experiences- we’re on top of the hill. Why go down? It took so long to make it to the top- enjoy the scenery.
My two favorite quotes:
“The purpose of our lives is to be happy”- Dalai Lama
“Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.” Lord Byron
For my money- laughter is the best medicine for growing old, nose hair and all.
I never thought I would turn into a senior citizen so soon. One day I’m listening to my kids at the dinner table tell me what they did at school, and now I’m listening to my
stomach telling me I shouldn’t have eaten the lasagna for dinner. Never too old to laugh- share please
@JoJoFromJerz So true— and sad Jo. Hey let’s lighten the mood: What was the most ridiculous name you ever came across? Mine was when I learned that my Aunt Tootsie married a man named Richard Roll. Yes— her name became Tootsie Roll! Any other odd names?
@ananavarro I remember when Stone was part of a big time political consulting company back in the day: Black, Manafort, Stone & Kelly- my how times have changed.
What was the most ridiculous name you ever came across? Mine was when I learned that my Aunt Tootsie married a man named Richard Roll. Yes— her name became Tootsie Roll! Your turn…
