Dramatic collapse of Xinfa embankment dam in northern #China due to overtopping that happened yesterday. Note how quickly dam is washed away! This is despite the dam has a large-capacity chute-type spillway and a bottom outlet which acts as an emergency spillway. See photo below.

@JuttaJordans @die_rote_frau @deichgenosse Das ist nicht korrekt. Vergleichbare Wetterlagen haben praktisch alle großen Hochwasserereignisse der letzten Jahrzehnte in Mitteleuropa ausgelöst. Die meteorlogischen und hydrologischen Modelle haben es korrekt vorhergesagt. Maßnahmen wären möglich gewesen.

@Qopolis @ZLabe The concepts of positive feedbacks and tipping points are clear and well known, but they do not mean that CC becomes irreversible. Crossing a climate tipping point will make it much harder to get back to the previous state, i.e. increase time needed by ~1-3 orders of magnitude.

@Qopolis @ZLabe Well, as long as we keep pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and destroying carbon sinks the climate will react accordingly. If we would finally act efficiently the trajectory of climate would change accordingly. That's plain physics, anything else is doomist propaganda.
