It’s getting cold outside. If you are considering some light winter reading by the fire (only if you have a fireplace, please), how about a book that lays out step-by-step instructions for fundamental foundational reformation of our public schools? Okay, maybe it’s not “light” reading at 400+ pages, BUT if you don’t like it, you can always heat the house by tossing it on the fire. 🤣 I've even drastically cut the price for you for a short time. What an amazing world!
And every new day offers us a new world as we build upon today's advances in an exponential dance of self-propagation of ideas and innovation.
THAT is exciting... and yet....
Our Public Schools have not fundamentally changed since before the 1950s. Yes, we have put some computers in some classrooms... whereupon we then just kept teaching the same way we always have.
We are America!
We cannot resist making everything better, faster, more efficient, and more powerful. Yet we have not applied our ingenuity, genius, and entrepreneurial spirit to one of our most important missions - the education of our children.
Can we do better? You know we can. I know we can. So what is preventing us from being who we naturally are?
THAT is a complicated question.
It involves societal momentum, politics, money, sociology, and just a bit of history.
Curious? You should read "Sacred Fire of Public Education".

George Washington talked about the Sacred Fire of Freedom. In today's world, KEEPING fundamental and lasting freedoms may prove to be a long, tough road to travel. Is that why so much attention has been paid to our Public Schools in recent years?
Although framed as an ideological battle, the battle over our Public Schools only fans the flames of the foundational problems with our public education system. Rather than focusing on "education", we focus on "forming" the child into a framework of society's making. Good or bad, right or left, we forget that children should be given the opportunity for self-determination once mature.
I think we educate that ability out of them in today's Public Schools. So... what do we do?

DO NOT tell me what's wrong!
If you have ever been involved in government proposals, you have likely gone through what are called COLOR Reviews. These range from PINK, to RED, to GOLD, and numerous other colors depending on the company. EACH designed (generally) to iteratively evolve the work of several writers into the PERFECT proposal to sell your product or services.
[If you have never done a government proposal, read on, you might find it interesting and applicable to your work.]
IF you have done these types of reviews, you know the one big Golden Rule for Reviewers. (Well, okay, there are about 35 different Golden Rules for these reviews, but this one is relevant to this post🤔)
GOLDEN RULE:
When you are ripping a proposal to shreds to make it "better", NEVER just tell the authors, "This is wrong," or "This isn't right, fix it," or "This doesn't answer the mail," or any variation thereof. That is only half of the equation to getting the result you want.
If YOU recognized something was wrong, then the best thing you can do to help make the proposal meet your vision is to either provide the answer, part of the answer, OR provide guidance on how to develop, research, or frame the answer. Don't just identify what's wrong, identify how to fix it.
[CAUTION: A little self-promotion follows to make the point.]
The quote in the graphic below is from a review of my new nonfiction book, "Sacred Fire of Public Education". When I started writing the book, I realized I had to do more than identify the problems with K-12 Public Schools. There are (and will be) hundreds of books endlessly analyzing those problems. Using my decades of experience in Color Teams, I realized that, IF I really believed there was a problem, it was incumbent on me to provide a solution if the book was going to have any worth... i.e., sell itself.
The result? Three years of research and development to identify the root causes, the pain points, previous attempts to fix the problem, and what specifically be done to correct the problem and prevent it from returning.
Again, if you have ever been involved in government proposals, you know one of the other Golden Rules: Do not just parrot the requirements back by saying something like, "We will fix it."
You have to ACTUALLY define the solution, describe the processes, identify who, what, when, and where, and make it clear to the reader that THIS solution is fully realized into an actionable plan.
That is exactly what the book does as I lay out a detailed, step-by-step plan for fundamental foundational reformation of our Public School system. I guess I did learn a few things over the years.
The point? Learning is one thing. Proper application in the learned environment is great. But being able to translate that specific environmental learning to new or different environments is golden.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Good or Bad, There's a Bigger Issue...
___________
No matter what YOU think about the quality of Public Schools, the FACT is that over 16 MILLION students will EXIT the K-12 Public Schools by 2030 for alternative schools such as private schools, homeschools, parochial schools, and others.
It doesn't matter WHY this is going to happen; it matters that this WILL happen.
When it does, what happens to the 50 million children left behind in the Public Schools?

I WONDER…
· We have reimagined SPACE TRAVEL and now have space tourism.
· We have reimagined TRANSPORTATION and now have self-driving cars.
· We have reimagined TECHNOLOGY and now command Artificial Intelligence.
· We have reimagined COMMUNICATION and can talk instantly to anyone in the world, communicate openly to the world, and see the opinions of millions of other people around the world (well, I'm not so sure that last one is a positive 😂)
Yet, we have NEVER applied our incredible innovation abilities to reimagining K-12 Public Education.
Yes, we have increased spending tremendously, we added computers, and we applied numerous bandaids to specific problems. But we are fighting a losing battle.
Maybe it is time for fundamental, foundational reformation of our Public Schools. Maybe we need to reimagine how our K-12 Public Education functions.
Do we have the guts to even contemplate that? Your thoughts?
