Since 1992 when I took over Younger Optics, “moat building” has been one of my preoccupations. Nearly everything we do is to strengthen those areas of the business that strengthen our moat. When making business choices, try ranking your alternatives by how much each one builds your company’s “moat.” Every business, large or small, can do this. Although the “moat building” materials will be different, the concept is always the same. Your business will thank you for it.
Perhaps the most amazing fact about Rx eyewear is that EVERY pair of Rx glasses is like a unique fingerprint. No two pairs of Rx glasses + frame +coatings + treatments are the same. Can you think of any other mass product like that???
My dad, Irving Rips was only 27 when he invented the "Younger Seamless Lens" (The first commerically available invisible bifocal) in his garage! My dad was a rebel and didn't like to follow conventional rules or listen to anyone who said "You can't do it".
BTW...for those of you who never heard of Younger..my dad invented the "Invisible Bifocal" !! Yes, that's right..somebody had to do it. Ben Franklin invented the eyeglass bifocal in 1784 and my dad did him one better in 1955...good job dad!
