Any US citizen who resides in a state is a citizen of that state. U.S. Const. amend. XIV.

I stand corrected. The Mongolian Empire was larger than the Soviet Union (an empire built on its ability to bypass all walls), and though non-contiguous, the British Empire encompassed more land than any other (without walls at all) and still stands, kinda.

Reflection:

Why don’t walls effectively protect empires? My thoughts: Empires are cultural constructs, not physical places to defend. If the empire isn’t viable enough to prevent cultural decay, it is doomed. Walls prevent infusion of ideas.
