Solitary confinement should be abolished as cruel and unusual punishment pursuant to the 8th Amendment. There are other ways to enforce prison discipline or protect inmates from harm.
Complete and utter inhumanity to keep any human being in solitary for 44 years. And the fact he was able to survive with his mind intact and write a book about the experience that was nominated for these awards is an incredible testament to Mr. Woodfox.

Bill Russell called out racism and spoke truth to power, much as Ali and Jim Brown and Arthur Ashe, and Tommie Smith and John Carlos and others, but he did he did it with a dignity and grace that was transcending.
It’s yet another sad day for the US as we sink into the abyss.
Although I was a die-hard Knicks fan in the 1960’s and 70’s, and hated the Celtics, this news has quite unexpectedly made me really sad. Not because of what he accomplished as an athlete, but for what he stood for as a spokesperson and a symbol.
