Axios is reporting that Reflection AI is about to release an extremely capable open weight model expected to compete with the top Chinese open weight ones. Reflection have been paying Elon $150 million a month for compute at Colossus since July, on top of a $1 billion compute deal with Nebius, so a strong model is certainly possible.
Sources also told Axios that multiple open source models from other unnamed American labs are also planned to release this month. American OSS Renaissance about to begin? Howard Lutnick has been hoping for something like this for some time, and at one point was reportedly even considering direct government funding to get the ball rolling. The USG wants American open models to compete with Chinese models globally.

SCOOP: OpenAI, Anthropic and security researchers are investigating tens of thousands of incidents - not dozens - in which their frontier models took steps that outside evaluators would consider problematic, sources told Axios.
The sheer volume of incidents found in our reporting indicate that the problem is orders of magnitude more complex than what is currently publicly known and disclosed.
The findings also raise questions about what level of control anyone working on AI development can expect to have over their own technology, and whether these kinds of incidents are becoming synonymous with frontier deployment.

Hasan is asked a single follow up question and immediately proves himself wrong
Hasan: All the way back in 2001, had 66% approval that America in some way, shape or form, was responsible for 9-11...
Alex: What poll is this?
Hasan: I might have actually presented it more favorable than it actually is... In 2001, 33% of all Americans said that US wrongdoing might have motivated 9-11 attacks
Alex: But that's less than 66%
👀 NEW: @hasanthehun joins @alexthomp on the Season 3 premiere of The Axios Show in what Piker called "the most contentious interview" he's done.
Piker claims that "pound for pound," America conducts more terror around the world than al-Qaeda.
Next clip from the @axios interview w/ Hasan Piker.
Me: It seems you care a lot more about how Israel treats Muslims than how China treats Muslims.
Piker: Yeah, because Israel is murdering not just Muslims, but Christians as well, with my tax dollars.
There's no actual red button that can shut off AI.
But companies are already building emergency brakes to stop nefarious AI systems before they cause serious damage and kill us all.

truly, soooo much to digest in this report — including cases tied to possible attempts to build bioweapons, state-sponsored surveillance platforms and agentic swarms carrying out cyberattacks

*Some personal news*
I’m THRILLED to be joining CNN as international correspondent.
At a time when impactful journalism never felt more important, I’m so excited to continue my reporting from around the world.
David Adkins ’26 criticizes College President Sian Leah Beilock’s response to this week’s protests — calling it an attack on free speech with negative impacts for both students and Dartmouth’s reputation.

Happening now: Dartmouth history professor pushed and subsequently arrested by New Hampshire state police during peaceful encampment. More than 15 arrests now.
@JeffSharlet@dartmouth Those cops were brutal to me. I promise I did absolutely nothing wrong. I was standing with a line of women faculty in the their 60s to 80s trying to protect our students. I have now been banned from the campus where I have taught for 34 years.
