@andyburnham and @Miatsf must look at ALL the evidence and judge the real world impact of deciding whether to choose #homegrown #oilandgas production (and the jobs, skills/technology/supply chains, tax revenue etc. that comes with it) OR to make the UK MORE dependent on higher cost, higher emission imports which do not support UK jobs or raise tax here in the UK.

Unfortunately, I know only too well the tendency of political advisors (particularly in No 10) to encourage decisions based on what may or may not look good ‘politically’ - even if not what is best for the country.

The reasons for approving (or not) #Jackdaw AND #Rosebank have nothing to do with wildfires or heatwaves.

And, given that they have BOTH been subject to the largest degree of environmental impact ever seen, if one is to be approved there can be no meaningful reason why they should not both be.

Out of the 403,000 total cancer cases diagnosed in the UK annually, roughly 96,700 are classified as ‘rare’.

While individual types of #rarecancer may affect very few people, they are collectively quite common, accounting for roughly 1 in 4 of all annual cancer diagnoses across the country.

There are over 198 distinct types of rare cancers. Because they are broken up into such tiny individual groups, patients face significant obstacles (delayed diagnoses, lower survival rates) compared to those with common cancers (like breast, lung, prostate, or bowel).

The Rare Cancers Act 2026, has been broadly welcomed but I support calls for Governments to go further - particularly in devolved administrations and health services not covered by the Act (see ‘Geographical Scope) image below).

I support calls for the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to voluntarily appoint their own national leads and match England’s clinical trial data-sharing commitments so patients across all four UK nations get equal care.

So sorry to hear of the passing of North East Scotland businessman and philanthropist, Sir Ian Wood.

I had the pleasure of working with Sir Ian as a North East MP and particularly in my time as a Minister in the Scotland Office.

Sir Ian has been a great champion of all things ‘North East 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿’ - whether that has been in fishing, oil and gas, the energy transition, agriculture, food & drink, tourism, life-sciences and of course his philanthropic work.

His spirit and inspiration live on in the Aberdeen City Region Deal, the Energy Transition Zone, Opportunity North East and in everyone who knew him and worked with him.

My deepest condolences to Lady Helen Wood, his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.

#Jackdaw and #Rosebank are THE most highly assessed fields for environmental impact on the PLANET.

Production emissions - and even the contribution to Scope 3 emissions - are nowhere near putting the UK’s climate obligations at risk.

As for the potential for further legal challenges, I have absolutely no doubt that the usual environmental campaigners will continue to raise these, but at some point they and their ideological, scaremongering assertions need to be told to just let it go!

Pushing back on our OWN domestic #oilandgas production only serves to push that production (not to mention our workers and their employers) overseas which we then need to import at higher cost AND higher emissions!

You’re right about the ongoing consultation. @Miatsf CAN only refer to the ongoing ‘quasi judicial process’, but that is due to end in the coming weeks.

But I’m not sure how you can assert that operators of #Jackdaw and #Rosebank ‘failed to provide environmental impacts info’, given that is precisely the info that is the basis of the current consultation? 🤔

I haven’t read the report - only the article for which you provided the link. But there is one absolutely glaring flaw in what appears to be the main argument - that being if there needs to be a reduction in GLOBAL #oilandgas exploration and production then it follows that UK production should be stopped? But all that does is force the ongoing demand (currently ~75% of UK whole energy) to be supplied by foreign imports, actually INCREASING global emissions.

The other argument seemingly being made is that the UK should show ‘leadership’ by cutting off our own domestic supplies as a signal of virtue? But ALL that does is reduce (by a tiny amount in comparison) TERRITORIAL emissions, merely by exporting those emissions overseas, where they don’t ‘count’ towards this country’s ’contribution.’

But, as I said, all that results in is a NET increase of global emissions.

Meanwhile, shutting down our own, lower carbon-intensity production reduces support for our renowned world-class jobs, skills, technology and supply chains - not to mention capital - which WILL be required to deliver a successful #homegrown #EnergyTransition.

Producing as much of our own oil and gas as we can, for as long as we need it, keeps global emissions down AND raises much needed tax revenue for the UK Exchequer.

And, I believe that can - and will - be done, while continuing to roll-out new #renewables AND continuing to decarbonise our economy.

It’s not one or the other.

@andyburnham, now @10DowningStreet 'Prime Minister Burnham', should absolutely do everything possible to grant production consent for #Jackdaw and #Rosebank which are by now THE most environmentally scrutinised new #oilandgas fields on the PLANET! Moves should also be made to remove the #EPL #WindFallTax, or - at the very least - bring forward plans for

@UKLabour's own revisions for a permanent 'Oil and Gas Price Mechanism.' An immediate decision on these fields - both of which can be producing in a matter of months - cannot be made until after current consultations are complete (10 Aug and 17 Aug respectively), and any demands form environmental NGOs for further consultations or indeed legal challenges must be challenged robustly.

Removing the virtue-signalling ban on new exploration licences will be more difficult due to its prominence in Labour's 2024 manifesto (to which Burnham says he will stick to).

I WOULD therefore welcome any consultation(s) under the new Prime Minister that would take a more 'pragmatic' (as has been suggested) view to future and ongoing #northsea #offshore oil and gas exploration in the UK, not only to support our #EnergySecurity but, by promoting the development and retention of world class #homegrown engineering skills, technology and supply chains, ensuring that the required #EnergyTransition is managed effectively and not just for 'political point scoring!'

Nobody serious is suggesting we need to abandon the development of #renewables and a cleaner energy future. But we need to get back to basics and truly appreciate that it takes today's energy to create the energy of tomorrow.

I wish Andy Burnham every success as Prime Minister. But it is my job to hold him to account.

Every announcement he makes should be properly funded. We cannot borrow more money and the tax burden is already too high, so the only answer is spending cuts.

I will work with him in the national interest to find savings from the benefits bill. If we reach agreement, my Conservative MPs will vote for those cuts in Parliament. That's the way to get Britain working.

I share @AndrewBowie_MP's frustration at Labour's completely unnecessary heel-dragging on #Jackdaw and #Rosebank - done in the name of climate virtue-signalling, but in actual effect, INCREASING global emissions, through increasing our reliance on imports.

I checked even farther back on my notes when I heard Ms Powell speak yesterday and much of the 'change of emphasis' appears to suggest at least a partial return to the spirit of the groundbreaking North Sea Tranisition Deal agreed between the #oilandgasindustry and the then @Conservatives government back in 2021.

Back North Sea oil and gas. Not imports.

In Parliament Square this week we put one question to the people who actually work in our industry: what one piece of advice would you give Andy Burnham on UK energy policy?

Apprentices, engineers, materials controllers and chief executives all gave the same answer. Keep it UK-based. Back homegrown energy 100%. Prioritise our own supply chains before we lose those skills for good. Give us a long-term strategy we can actually deliver against. While there will always be a need for imports, government policy should be focussed on maximising domestic production.

Homegrown energy supports our jobs and communities.
Homegrown energy helps grow our economy.
Homegrown energy strengthens our energy security.
