Morocco did it. But why?

Morocco did not facilitate this to punish Spain over Gaza. It was not acting on orders from the United States or Israel.

The reason is much simpler: it worked before. Morocco used the same tactic during the 2021 Ceuta crisis and concluded that migration is an effective tool of political pressure. So it used it again, this time on a much larger scale.

The message to Madrid was clear: Support Algeria, back positions that undermine Morocco on the Sahara issue, and we can create problems on your own territory. It was a reminder that Morocco claims Ceuta and that, if it chooses, it can unleash thousands of its own citizens toward the enclave to pressure Spain.

When the images spread internationally and the situation began to spiral beyond what was politically useful, Morocco reversed course. By then, the message had already been delivered.

Madrid knows exactly what happened but has every incentive to avoid saying it publicly. The Governor of Ceuta, however, did not mince words.

Sean, if I was only thinking of myself I would just say nothing. It would be much easier but the interesting thing for me is the verbal attacks from gay people. Proving to some extent that these accusations of community are just a farce. The question I would ask you is what are you doing because it seems performative and desperately trendy. This young beautiful girl in the picture is May Hayat who was at The Nova Festival, her friend was murdered and she escaped. We are standing in front of wall of people who were killed. All of them are peaceful, dance music lovers who would dance to your music. If anyone should be ashamed it should be you. Shouting 'Free Palestine' might seem noble to you but history will show you how wrong you are. Even if I was only 'doing it' for Philip Sallon' who fucking hates me or Jon Moss who tried to bankrupt me, I would still do it.
At this point I should say I hate Netanyahu but I don't. What would you do if the people you were elected to serve and protect were slaughtered, raped and brutalised. Had they not been stopped on Oct 7, it would have been the best example of a genocide.
Why not shout about Ukraine because just like Isreal, Ukraine was attacked.
I am not anti muslim because I understand that what happened on Oct 7 was about as ungodly as anything can get. People are not bad because of what they are or what god they seven but because of what they do.

Alas, Mr. Congressman, I'm not lying. And I started this line of questioning assuming you were telling the truth. I've written long essays on extremist Israeli violence in the West Bank. I know it happens. I was ready, at first glance, to believe it happened here. But it didn't. This wasn't Israeli violence. This was agitprop for your American audiences.

I said explicitly that I'm not familiar with the details of that area. It took a lot of effort for JPost to find out what it found out -- which was that it was a closed military zone only recently opened.

But if you'd coordinated your visit with Israeli authorities, this would have been sorted out from the start. Those soldiers weren't angry or aggressive, they seemed mostly just confused about the status of the area and how to handle your visit.

Because, you know, there was no coordination.

JPost suggests all that in the article you yourself shared.

And what of the violence? Your group had cameras -- a professional photographer and at least one bodycam -- yet you've produced no evidence that I've seen of the violence you claim to have experienced.

Remember that you claimed the violence was sufficient to demand that Netanyahu order the prosecution of those soldiers.

I've seen that sort of violence before; if you produce that footage, I'll join your demand for prosecution. That's not rhetoric. I really will, wholeheartedly.

But if you don't, I think it's safe to assume you blew up a small inconvenience caused by your own refusal to talk to Israelis.

In a similar vein, you used the word "detained" as if you were unlawfully held against your will -- and hide behind its second meaning, that you were a bit delayed in driving forward into the area. The first is on the spectrum of kidnapping crimes, the second is the sort of problem you'd encounter at the entrance to a federal building as you search your pockets for an ID. Which was it?

Anyway, you were angling for some domestic political brownie points, and congratulations, you got 'em.
