Faith cannot be measured by how strongly one believes nor by the amount or quality of one’s hope. If it could, faith would be nothing more than how you feel at a given moment. Faith, if you have it, is in your past. It’s not what you tried to do to escape a situation. Faith is what you did right when there was no escape. Having faith is not the means of getting away from something but the means to persevere with the Word of God, both testaments, and prayer as your anchor. When faith is no longer a means of escape, the unbelievable riches in faith, far exceeding money, make you immovable, a mountain inside. No one can take away what you said to Jesus, despite how you felt, when you were being crushed. And no one can take away the joy you have after the fact, knowing you weren’t alone and will never be.
First, Jesus says have faith. Then - after that, He says ask. He’s inviting us to trust him first in the dark places - where we need to know He’s with us. Faith requires a relationship. Anything less, like viewing faith as a means of escape, is like taking someone’s last name in marriage because they’re rich.
You can develop faith right now. Pour your heart out to God. That means saying all the things you don’t really want to say. Then, after that, choosing your path, like David did. Let him be your pattern:
My God, why have You forsaken Me? (This is a hard place)
Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning? (Note his embrace of just how bad it is. He’s not running away or minimizing it)
O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent. (Note the details about how he feels both inside and out).
Then, after acknowledging where he is, how bad things feel, he chooses - despite his feelings, the truth he shall cling to - faith:
But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel…
Both David and Jesus followed this pattern because anything else, by nature, rejects an actual relationship with God. For context, our enemy would love nothing more for us than to think of faith and/or power as a means of escape, which is why Jesus, like us, was tempted the way He was in the desert.
Yes! We agree. He builds in the capacity to see and respond to His draw or calling. There’s no room for self-righteousness here. Everything comes from Him, including the freedom to choose when He calls. Otherwise, one has to rewrite and redefine every Biblical instance of words like believe, choose, follow, etc. to mean the opposite of what is written. Probably one of my favorite clarifying contexts is in Acts 17, God made the world, every nation, “so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us….”So lovely to see it spelled out plainly yet again, here through Paul.
No verse subjected to Calvinist commentary can unwrite, omit, or cancel out what’s been written somewhere else in the Bible. When trying to do so becomes one’s foundation for belief, of course they are going to produce contradictions and controversies.
17 skeletons, mostly of children, found in a well in Norwich in 2004, were identified as Ashkenazi Jews by DNA analysis. It seems likely they were murdered in the 1190 pogromist frenzy that swept Britain at the onset of the Third Crusade. https://t.co/dMSgCGc7LK
@DeeBrownsghost@HanShawnity You’re being short-sighted. It’s a bad look if you care about the Constitution and what a DSA government could do with a surveillance state.
@jmillermi@HanShawnity You’re not making a good case for giving the next DSA government all the tools they need. And you’re hopefully not suggesting the amount of cameras today was equal to 2021. It’s about a 700% increase.
So many good things can be done with surveillance. Also, what’s a DSA government likely to do to you if you decide a third vaccine dose or a mask isn’t your jam? The precedent we set for the capacity to abuse power will be used against everyone. They patrolled beaches with machine guns to keep people in masks. Maybe with Flock, they’d just de-bank you while you were out in the beach and order an IRS audit just because they can.
I’d suggest I do not have perfect theology and no one else does either. I’d suggest that day I first accepted Jesus, that commitment (compared to today) was the weakest point of that commitment. And it was exactly what He intended. I don’t disagree with Calvinists that Jesus alone saves. I don’t believe the issue is salvific. I disagree that those who are saved had no choice in the matter and those who are not saved are incapable of responding to even the most basic call from God, where He reveals Himself through creation. I think Calvinists give too much credit to humans, ironically. It is God’s call that gifts us with the freedom to put down our burdens. There’s no room for self-righteousness when will and choice don’t exist until God gives it to us by calling us towards Him.
Gun control never works. It doesn't work domestically. And it doesn't work internationally. Obama's Iran deal was therefore farcical. And Trump's efforts have been more of the same. The bad guys can always acquire weapons. So the bad guys must be neutralized.
I do not have to prove a negative based on a corrupt premise (total depravity) that man is not totally depraved in your interpretation. I agree man is fallen and that Genesis 6 describes a world of great wickedness. The problem with your blank-check cherry-picking of verses is simple: you don’t actually read what is written. In the same chapter, Noah was walking with God. But Calvinism uses a half-context argument to redefine every later verse about seeking, seeing, and God desiring all to be saved, even ignoring the fact that in a world with “nothing but wickedness”, there was this guy named Noah. I mean, it’s right there. See the contradiction you just created. You can’t apply a half a verse to all men being completely wicked when the next sentence mentions Noah.
You’re not asking me to disprove something the Bible says. You’re asking me to disprove the label Calvin put upon it. Challenge completed.
@dingusfinkelste@HanShawnity Yeah, or have Flock cameras to de-bank you for going to church instead of BLM riots. It’s crazy people have such short memories.
Surely you know Calvinism is a commentary on a select and exclusionary collection of verses that don’t say what Calvinism concludes, hence all the contradictions and tension. This is the problem. You can’t or won’t face the contradictions Calvinism produces. Because of that, your exegesis has no weight with me. How could it?
I actually wanted to show we have more in common than you think. But alas. Challenge accepted. Prove in the Word that every unsaved person is incapable of any real seeking (which means you have to omit a lot of Scripture), that draw means irresistible regeneration (which means you have to invent Scripture), and that God must change the nature before any genuine response to the call is possible (which means you have to invent even more Scripture). The lack of Scripture, not the wealth of commentary on it, should be your clue something’s wrong with the commentary, which clearly produces contradictions in the Word.
@maxamir Never said or even implied such things. You’re putting words in my mouth so you don’t have to look at the contradictions Calvinism creates. God calls those in darkness. It’s common sense.
Ok, so now Calvinism has you contradicting and cancelling out verses with verses, as if that’s what God intends. So a wise man would ask himself here, what do I need to understand about ALL these verses so that no contradiction or need to out-verse another verse exists.
There is simple, common sense, Scriptural answer. But it’s not within the reading of the system of Calvinism, which makes it very difficult to see (and very difficult to want to see).
I don’t deny election. Quite the opposite! I must suppose God truly meant it when Timothy said…. God, “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth”, calls all men to Himself, beginning with revealing Himself through creation to every person and continuing onward.
I believe He means it when Paul said, “He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,….. so that they should seek the Lord…… in the hope….. that they might grope for Him and find Him……, though He is not far from each one of us;”
Acts 17
But there is no bridge within election that excuses a belief where God creates some men only to watch them burn. It’s an insane take.
The precedent set: they capture license plates, cars, and faces. Then these are stored in the cloud. And police are not the only ones who have access. What are you going to do in a left wing government when you dissent? A snarky post or a hurty words meme? The issue is not the issue. It’s the precedent we set that matters. It will be used against Americans. History proves this.
